I’ve checked the youtube videos on changing the stock radio on a 2000 corolla (actually in this case it was a 2002 but it’s the same series).

The change seems simple enough and no tools required other than maybe a plastic remover.

Can anyone verify that the following stereo will fit? I want to put it in the same position as the stock (just below the air vents).

There is some stereo harness kits, I’m assuming I don’t need those because they look like they are actually for the lower compartment.

Regarding the wires, I’m also assuming the default wires work.

When installing the radio, I will first remove the battery positive terminal cable and make sure to cover the battery terminals with a cloth.

First disconnect the negative cable. Whenever I have put in
a stereo. I always used the install kit.Came with a mounting
box. I would also get any harness kit you can to prevent cutting
any stock wiring. The harness should be plug and play.

Damn, I installed the wire harness before realizing I would have to solder or crimp the connectors with the car audio’s stock wires.

Since I do not have either a solder or crimps, can I just use electric tape to seal the connections?

yes you can use tape, its recommended to solder at the least use but connectors. hears a video.

I would look at aftermarket wiring harness. Scoche and Metra are 2 big names that come to my mind. For a few dollars, you can buy the harness, solder the like wires on your bench and then just plug it to the stock wire connectors when you want to install. Makes install a snap. That’s how I did mine.

I would not twist wires and use tape. Electrical tape looses stickiness over time and they will unravel. Besides, it’s not easy to tape 8-10 wires in a harness with limited spaces. The least I will use is crimp on butt connectors.

I went back and got a wire crimps and crimped the wires with the harness.

Although I was able to remove the stock radio, I was not able to remove the side mounts from the stock radio (the screws were stripped).

The new stereo came with a slide/sleeve bracket (looks like a metal box)…so I just dropped that in and so far it holds it in place but there is no screws really holding it. Do you think it is fine this way? (everything turns on and works)

Also, where would can I buy the side mounts?

Good to hear you use connectors that is my recommended method. What you are talking about is installation kit. FYI they sell them at wallymart too. Just remember to not leave that face plate in the car. I learned this the hard way. It will happen when you least expect it too.

The installation kit came with the new stereo (it was already “attached”). I also attached the faceplace just fine? (everything fits)

Here is what the installation kit looks like:

I just dropped the thing into the bay, it seems like a somewhat snug fit…but it’s not really secured with any screws or plastic tabs etc. Is it ok?

                      That will work.

There are tabs on that sleeve that you bend to hold it in place, the rectangular pieces at the front edge

Yes, the tabs on the sleeve are holding the stereo in place…..but what’s holding the sleeve? The sleeve fits nicely in the given space of the old stock radio…but there is no screws to guarantee the hold.

(Regardless, I did find the side mounts on 1st toyota parts and will be putting them in the next few days, but I’m still very interested in how the sleeve would be mounted)

You can just use wire nuts your local hardware store till have them
