Inner Tie Rod Clunk

      OK the car is a 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5L. Noticeable clunk coming from the left inner tie rod when moving the steering wheel. You can actually feel it in the steering wheel as well. The car has 50K on it and the outer tie rod looks good. Should I make it easier on myself and replace the whole assembly or try and attach the new inner rod to the old outer? Also do I reuse the old boot or do new inner tie rods come with one?

        Replace inner and outer together. All the inner tie rods I’ve ever done didn’t come with new boots. If you tear them coming apart or they’re already ripped you’ll need to order them and the new clamps. They use clamps like CV boots have. Have seen people use a narrow hose clamp when they didn’t have the factory type clamp available. This is a 2010, is it still under the warranty period? If so I wouldn’t touch it.

          I would replace the inner tie rod with a new boot. if nothing
          is wrong with the outer tie rod reuse it. 😉

            I decided to replace the outer at the same time, only $20 more. New boot too since with my luck I’ll tear the old one. Thanks for the help!

                One more thing to note is that if you notice the rack leaking or a problem with the other side you might consider replacing the rack. A new rack will come with new inner tie rod ends and that would cure all the problems at once.
