Well folks, after the pricey repair to get the transmission done, the mechanic road tested the car and found all is well except that when he goes into Neutral, the dash reports that it is in Drive, but it is indeed in neutral. All other gears show up fine on the dash, or at least I assume so. He said he wants to put in a new Neutral safety switch. Does this sound like a necessary replacement or is there something that can simply be adjusted? Thanks!

Is the dash display digital? If it’s analog, then there is probably a cable that can be adjusted to get the indicator to the right spot. If it’s digital, he might be right, but I would expect a bad neutral safety switch to allow the car to start in any gear.

+1 to this or the vehicle would not start if a neutral safety switch was an issue.

I would try to find a wiring diagram or research how the indicator on the dash is used when the transmission is in gear.

          Keep us posted.

I agree with the above post. Talk to your mechanic and ask them to explain how replacing that part will correct the main issue.

Yea it is a digital display. Could there be any other factors to this problem?

Well I’m thinking about leaving the switch alone. I’m already spending 2700 for the rebuild alone. What are the effects of leaving it in there as is?

I don’t think it’s the neutral safety switch you’re after but the PRNDL switch. This is a switch that is normally located on the transmission and indicates what gear it’s in and is often adjustable. It sounds to me that the person that installed your transmission didn’t take the time to adjust this properly. Before you ‘replace’ that sensor I would take it back and have them adjust it properly first to see if you can correct the condition.

Is it located inside or outside the transmission?

Should be located on the outside of the transmission in the same area as the manual valve where the cable or linkage connects from the shifter.
