I’ve noticed when checking the ignition timing that the timing mark on the balancer jumps around a bit, withing a degree or two in either direction. I was wondering if it might be a sign of the rubber in the balancer getting weak or going bad?

I found this forum thread that describes the same issue:

I am following the correct procedure (disconnecting the EST connector, distributor is tightened down, etc). Timing chain and distributor are both new. Just throwing the balancer question out there. Thanks guys

I take it this is a f150? year make model? If the vehicle runs right I would not
worry about a degree or two. Usually when the rubber goes bad you get a vibration
        you can feel.
