Eric and fellow forum users, I have a 1994 Prelude with a H23A1 engine. The ignition timing was too advanced on my car and When I tried to set it the red mark on the flex plate doesn’t line up with the arrow on the block every time the light goes off. The distributor is all the way down and won’t move anymore and the mark still is not lined up. It’s still has a good way to line up and I feel like if I get it lined up I would get so much power back. So my question is if my problem is on the timing belt side? Timing belt stretched or mechanical timing is off? The arrows on the camshafts are lined up so Idk what the problem could be, thank you.

Ignition timing should never really need adjusting. Especially if you’re trying to correct a performance problem.

You may be correct that the mechanical timing could be off. You might want to remove the valve cover and check the mechanical timing of the engine to make sure it’s correct. Based on your description, it might not be. If it’s off you might consider replacing the timing belt instead of just setting it up in time.

You might also want to check to see if the harmonic damper is in good shape. If the rubber broke on the inside the timing marks will move and you won’t get an accurate reading.

Once you have that taken care of you can then set the ignition timing. Know that you can’t just grab the distributor and start turing. There is often a procedure that needs to be followed when setting ignition timing. Often listed on the under hood sticker.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I do plan on replacing the timing belt myself since I believe it might be stretched. One question, Do I have to place the #1 Piston on TDC?

If you are replacing the timing belt you will want to follow a service manual instructions for your vehicle. I will explain how to line everything up for the replacement.
