This is a fun topic that might spark some heated discussion. I’d like to see Eric do a video talking about his choice as well (although I guess he already made it with the fairmont). If you had 5 grand to blow on a car that you find interesting what would it be and why?

My pick: Lt1/6 speed camaro/trans am.

Pretty much the fastest you can go for 5 grand right now I think. Nearly 300 horsepower with a manual and rear wheel drive. Fairly good reliability and potential as well.

I’ve always wanted a 2000 Civic Si in Dyno Blue, or a 1991 Si CRX.

Just too many people want 5,000 for ones that are beat up. I’d prefer the CRX with a B18C5 engine, or K20 if it can somehow fit.

I would build the bottom end on my mustang, throw a department of boost manifold on it with a gt500 whipple blower and throw a new timing kit on her. I would really love a 650+ hp street car to daily.

I am currently driving a 15-year-old German car and I’d need a reliable Japanese car as my second option. An used Lexus or Acura.

99-02 BMW 540i 6 speed. 4.4L V8 highway monster, Acceleration doesn’t slow till about 130 mph, superb handling and balance, luxury amenities, very good looking, and I already have tools/experience fixing the timing chain problems that are inevitable on them. Most shops are terrified of getting involved in that repair, making them sometimes cheap to pick up a nice car with a broken engine really cheap. I was just looking for them on CL, and there is a pick of the litter available within the 5k range.

Another way to go would be to spend it on the old Jetta I already have. A reasonable engine swap with all the trimmings would be a nice evolution of it after driving it 15 years with the original engine. It’s a waste of time to continue to tune it, but it would be nice to have a little more power and a rev limit over 7k.

You can fit a K20 in anything. It might not be pretty, but it can be done. A co-worker has an EF with a K20. The hood closes, but there’s spacers at the hinges.

Personally I would get a one piece flywheel, new clutch, rebuilt motor and an upgraded turbo kit for my car. I don’t feel like spending $1000 on a dual mass flywheel that’s probably just going to fail again.

                      Good question….

I’d go for some old classic compact truck or compact/smaller car and use what’s left of the 5 grand to fix it up the right way. Or maybe some old AMC vehicle , just because they’re different. Otherwise, the usual sort of “classic muscle car” while cool, seems to obvious and already done. I like my stuff unique.

If the question was 10 grand, it would be either a model A or an OLD Chevy with the straight 6. I doubt I could get one for 5 grand, so it’s not a valid answer.

i would use the 5k to fix my car so i can drive my mother, wife, blind friend and other friends around again. it has been out for about a month now and i have been fixing what i can when i can. the person that had the car before me did not take good care of beep beep cars name.

I would buy that Snap on box with tools on the other post. The problem is that spending cash on cars other than basic maintanence is waste of money. Heads, cams, blowers, nitrous, all huge wastes of money. Tools, they can hold their value and be useful, unlike a performance modification or rusted out money pit which just saps the wallet, where as tools can keep the wallet full of cash.
