Im having problems with my 84 camaro, the stock quadrojet went out on me and i could find any one to rebuild it so i went with a 1406 edelbrock on a basicly stock 305. When the rpms get over 2500 it runs great but at idle it sounds like its going to die. Ive looked around on here and other forums and they talked about getting a difront distributor. Would that help or could i ajust the timing on mine? Thanks also this is my first post

I’m looking forward to answers to this one too. I guess I am surprised that changing the carb to another carb would impact timing in any way. I could see it changing if going from carb to injector system but why change timing when just changing out carb? Ok, pros, I want to know TOO!

the ignition advance should been install to direct vacuum. On the carburetor there is a port vacuum (there big debate about ported vacuum) But for now make sure you are install to manifold vacuum.

If you have an edelbrock fresh out of the box. I would disassemble the top and look at the float level. Some time they are not even set right from factory.

What idle speed does the engine idle previous with the old carb?? did you try raising the idle speed screw as the blade might be just about or even close to begin with.

Is there any modification to your engine.. and what altitude are you at ?

Don’t play with the ignition yet as your carburetor is not set yet.

Also make sure that carburetor is bolt with decent torque.. If not you will have vacuum leak right at the base and that remove lots of performance as less air getting suck in.

The old one did around 700ish, the only mods on it are new valve covers and headers but it ran fine before with the old carb. I did do some adjusting, I can get it down to where is all but dying or where its starting to idle on the higher side. My elivation is 427 feet. Ill try to switch the ports and see what happens.

switching the vacume line from the carb seem to work. Now my other question where should I connect the vapor canaster line to?

I would have LOVED to rebuild that quadrajet for you. Those are probably my favorite carburetors ever. You didn’t go wrong with the one you have, in fact, you chose well. Most people go with too big a CFM thinking it will make more power. You’re about bang on where you should be in CFM for that engine.

You need to set it up correctly. Get your hands on a vacuum gauge and hook it up to intake vacuum. Run the engine till it gets warm and let it idle. Then adjust the mixture screws a little at a time until you get as much intake vacuum as possible. Every once in a while blip the throttle and recheck the reading. You may have to do this for a bit to get it right. Also, if it’s an electric choke, and I think it is, you want to have it hooked up to an ignition hot source. If not, the choke won’t open all the way and screw up the mix.

In front of me written on my note pad are the numbers for my Ford’s carburetor. I plan to do a rebuild on it just to cover this and other carburetor adjustments in future videos. For now, I hope that information is helpful. You can also call Eldelbrock and they may also be able to offer some tips. They do have some pretty nice customer support.

Good luck and keep us posted.
