Hi. I’m new to this forum and i’m sorry if there’s any topic related to my problem but i couldn’t find one. 😳 I’m having a problem that has been driving me crazy for the last 2 months. I’ve bought a ’96 Ford Fiesta with a 1.3 l Endura Engine. The problem is after i’m using engine brake it stops running. For example i’m driving in 4th gear with 2000 RPM, press clutch and switch to 3rd gear, release clutch for 3-4 seconds and then if i press the clutch pedal again the engine stop running. I’ve replaced the spark plugs, battery, spark plugs cables, oil and all the filters, ran several scan via OBDII, cleaned up the Throttle Body and the Idle Valve with WD40 but nothing seems to work. I still suspect the idle valve but i need some advice to know for sure that i’m right or not before spending a lot of money on that valve. Thank you for your help and happy new year!

will the car idle normal? turn the ac on and see if the car idles up.
does the car restart right away after stall?

hmm.. most of the times after i start the engine it stopped and after the second atempt it is working fine; when i hit the ac button nothing happens and the ac’s not working. Anyway this is a crappy engine, i’ve got more problems like a sound that’s comming from the block ( i think main bearings or timing chain), rocker arms noise but that’s not related.

do you suggest to replace that idle valve?

did you replace the cap and rotor? have you checked fuel pressure
or spark? need to find out which one is missing when the stall happens.
you could also check for vacuum leaks.when you cleaned the IAC did you also
clean the inside passages? what you could try is with the engine running unplug
the IAC.see if the engine bogs.what rpm does the car idle at when it runs?

i cleaned the IAC passage where i found a little spring, cleaned that plastic part between the IAC and intake manifold but i didn’t cleaned neither inside the manifold nor inside the IAC solenoid. engine runs arround 900 RPM( don’t know exactly). I’m thinking at IAC when the engine brake takes place it is closing and remains closed even after clutch pedal is pressed but i don’t know for sure.

P.S. I disconnected the IAC during engine running and it stops. I did this like 10 times and same result.

remove the iac. turn the key on without starting it.
see if the iac solenoid moves.

If you’re all out of options, the very last choice would be to turn in the throttle idle adjustment screw to open up the throttle just a little bit to allow the engine to idle with the IAC motor unplugged (which it should be able to). Whats happening is that when you release the gas pedal to shift, the IAC kicks in and closes to reduce RPMs, and when you press in the clutch, the engine speed drastically decreases and kills the engine. You would be able to solve this problem by really lightly pressing on the gas pedal when you put in the clutch so there would be sufficient airflow to keep it running, however the idle adjustment screw is a very last resort, and should only be turned a LITTLE bit at a time. You do not want your engine to idle too high.

yes pengy. you’re nothing but right. that’s how i keep using my car after i almost had an accident because of engine stalling. but i cannot imagine why that IAC can’t keep up with the engine, since it’s working but it’s working slower than normal, so it’s a bit lazy. anyway thank you all for the advice, i’m gonna take my chances and buy a new one. Hope this will solve my problem. Thanks again.

I’m a bit nervous about your description of the engine noises. If your engine isn’t in good shape then it may not idle as a result. You can’t rule out a mechanical issue, in particular a problem with the thrust bearings. As an aside, I’ve not had much luck with cleaning IAC valves, therefore I recommend replacement over cleaning.

+1 Keep us posted on your progress. Also make sure you don’t have any vacuum leaks as this can also cause idle problems.
