Idle Issues

Ok, so I’ve got my 1990 Ford F250. This truck can sit and idle like a champ when I start it up in the morning, but I drive down the road a few miles and I come to a stop sign and she starts idling really rough, almost stalling out. But heres what gets me confused. If I put it in park the idle smooths right out, nuetral and reverse it gets alot better but is still a little rough. But its back to a near perfect idle in park. And if I let it sit for a minute it will be fine for a couple more miles worth of stops and then it gets rough again. But only if I let it sit. If I pop it in park and then take right off agin it goes right back to a rough idle. I’m almost completely stumped here. What could cause a situation like this?

You may want to check fuel pressure or try changing the fuel filter.
more in this link. when was the last tune up?

That was my thought but pressure is 15psi at the fuel rail. Could this be a volume issue?

            Torque converter?
My Dakota did this and it would stall when I tried to go just before I brought it in for a rebuild it has been needing and the tranny guy said it was the TC causing it to stall out. .

Torque converter is disabled in neutral and I still have a rough idle.

What you could do is tape the gauge to the windshield and see what the pressure is
doing when happening. another thing is check the throttle body is not full of carbon.

Throttle body looks pretty gummed up to me. Lets see how she does all cleaned up.

Well I cleaned out the throttle body and its definitely a little nicer off the line. But she still acts like she wants to stall out part of the time. I guess the next step is to test my O2 sensor and see if I have good volume from the fuel filter. Hopefully I’ll find my issue here. Any thoughts?

Fuel pressure should be 32 to 37 psi on that truck.

Try disconnecting the vacuum hose at the EGR valve and drive the truck. It might set the MIL light but it won’t do any harm. If it continues to run the same then plug it back in. If the problem is gone then the likely problem is a plugged EGR vent filter. It’s located under a removable cap on the EGR vacuum solenoid.

A failing O2 sensor is another very possible cause.

Well. That’s good to know. The manual I have said the regulator should set it at 13-17 at the fuel rail.
