Start with any check engine light codes you might have. Since it only happens in reverse, you might have a transmission problem that’s causing the issue. Any codes you may pull would be important clues as to what might be going on there. These articles might help also.

I have seen a few older Chrysler cars with this problem. It could be the torque converter locking up in reverse. You might have a transmission tech check it for you. They usually don’t charge for an opinion.

sorry its been over a year the transmission had failed a few months after i posted this. we had it rebuilt 3 TIMES the 3rd time the charm.

its still having the problem. the same codes keep comeing up.they are

            po740-torque converter clutch solenoid circuit

            p0700-transmission control sysyem

these keep coming up every few months after we replace the that box connector (forget what it is call)

It could be a bad torque converter clutch. Chances are you are still using the original converter with the rebuilt trans. That could be why the issue is recurring even though the trans was repaired. Interestingly, sometimes you can have a bad converter without noticeable or adverse performance while driving because it isn’t so bad to cause a noticeable symptom, but bad enough to set codes. I would look at that, especially if the solenoid was replaced during the trans overhaul. If the solenoid was not replaced, that could be causing the same codes if it is sticking or failing in which case the converter is probably fine. If the solenoid is new and the codes recur, and the wiring is ok, then the converter itself is most likely the culprit.
