Hello people! I’m having a bit of a problem with my car. I’m not a mechanic but I do occasionally

If the engine is known for oil consumption problems, and was already rebuilt once, I would guess it’s likely toast. But have you tried any of the diagnostics that you asked for just to be certain? You won’t get much $ out of a car with a crap engine if you go to sell it.

          Quoted From Alexander:

I’ll go ahead and check for leaks. As for the gunk how would I go about cleaning that gunk?

Maybe you can try an additive like lucas or some other over the counter treatements. I heard lucas is pretty good. Of course do all routine maintenance. Oil and filter change, air filter, pcv valve and hoses, plugs, etc. etc. And if you do use additives, keep an eye on the oil as it may tend to get dirty quickly.

Im not a fan of synthetic oil, its too expensive for what it is.

You probably just had some oil drops fall of the header and or exhaust and smelled it when it was burning off.

I would not use a cleaner at this stage in the game. if the previous owner did not do the recommended oil changes
you will have sludge build up.If you break all that free now you risk clogging the oil passages and pump screen. You
will then starve the engine for oil and destroy it. Try switching back to conventional oil. pull the plugs to see if oil deposits
              are on them.C8-)

                Quoted From Alexander:

I do have that engine but actually today I gave it a look and it has a stamp saying “Re-Manufactured 2007” and the car is an 05? Any insight on that? Trust me, I want to replace this car. I took a peak at the engine manifold today and one of the screw threads is broken, not even there.

That vehicle was probably one of those that was recalled due to that engine issues. Your best bet is to call a Nissan dealership and see what they can dig up with your Vin #.

A couple of things you’ve said have send up flags for me, the first is using synthetic oil, this is something I do NOT recommend on a high mileage engine that has had regular oil in it for the span of it’s life, synthetic oil has different flow characteristics than regular oil and as a result if your engine wasn’t burning oil or leaking oil before you switched to synthetic it will now.

Second thing that sends up flags is that you said there wasn’t much oil in the engine to begin with, not good in any language, an engine without oil is like you without blood, neither one is long for this world.

That said perhaps it’s time to start looking for a new ride, money may be tight but I feel in the end based on your description you might be better off cutting your losses and moving on to something else so change the oil back to regular oil (leave the new filter in) and keep a couple of quarts in the trunk and check it every time you fill up from now on to make sure you keep it topped off.
