I’ve had pretty good luck with rockauto (http://www.rockauto.com). There are other ones that I use but the prices are pretty close and I like rock’s format. If you need GM Parts. GMPartsDirect or similar sites are pretty good, prices are cheap, markup/shipping is expensive, but in the end it is still less than the dealer.
If you are on a budget for the compressor you might be able to find a good used OEM one from a salvage yard. On rock the cheapest is $205 + core charge. If your compressor had a catastrophic failure you will also need an accumulator, orifise tube, and system flush. Plus other little things, if you aren’t familiar with cars I would send it to an A/C shop.
I would definitely check them out. With the ball joints and other suspension components, don’t buy the cheap stuff if you plan on owning your vehicle for a long time, they will wear out faster than OEM components. Get Moog or the Raybestos Professional/AC Delco (The last two seem to be made by the same manufacturer, Spicer I think.)
Enter this discount code: 67774854692353 . It’s 5% off, good through October 30th.
Good luck.
October 16, 2011 at 11:00 am #447572October 16, 2011 at 11:00 am #447573I would use OEM parts from the dealership if that’s in your budget and time frame.
You get what you pay for when it comes to automotive parts C8-)
October 16, 2011 at 11:00 am #447574There are good aftermarket brands that are as good or better than OEM parts – sometimes you might save some money too. Sometime the parts are the same OEM, just a different box. In the end you’re right, you get what you pay for – aftermarket or otherwise.
October 16, 2011 at 11:00 am #447575I agree that you should use OEM stuff whenever you can especially when the prices are close. The stuff you get from GMPartsDirect will be the same stuff you would buy at the dealer – without the outrageous markup. Rockauto is also a good site where you get to choose between OEM (in this case either Delco, Delphi or might be Denso?) and aftermarket rebuilt. No site that I have found is consistantly the lowest for every part – so you have to shop around. I took a quick look and came up with gmpartsdirect = 263, OEM at Rock = 245, and the rebuilt ones were 245+ so, I’d just go with new from one of these places – this isn’t a job you want to do twice. Like Third Gear said, you have to calculate shipping on these prices, but it’s much better than the dealer.
October 16, 2011 at 11:00 am #447576i try to never buy from the dealer themselves. its so expensive that i just get into a bad mood by simply walking into the service department. official online retailers like GMPartsDirect is the way to go or other reputable places
October 17, 2011 at 11:00 am #447577Dealer stuff is best but many of the OE parts are made by the aftermarket suppliers for domestics. As for a local supplier you could just as easily go to your local auto parts store, they should be able to get you whatever you need for that truck. I also recommend Rockauto as I’ve had a lot of luck with them if you’re looking for an online source.
October 17, 2011 at 11:00 am #447578Hey man. I work at a pizza shop, and here’s a tip. If you plan on making a large purchase from a higher end parts store (NAPA, etc) or even the dealer, ask for a quote on the parts. Then, ask what they would cost if you bought the parts department pizza for lunch. I have literally had a quote from Genuine Auto Parts (local to Dayton, OH area) go from 380 dollars to 216 dollars when I was replacing three window regulators and 2 motors, along with the master power window switch on a 2000 Grand Am. I get half off from where I work, so I made an extra 145 bucks or so. The point is, you can go buy ’em 3 large pizzas from somewhere, and spend 20 bucks to save 164 dollars. Parts places know they have huge mark-ups to work with, and if you go shopping about an hour before lunch time, it’s amazing what you can get worked out. Just a suggestion.

Just to add to it, I wouldn’t try that scam, I mean “bartering” too much. Save it for large purchases. As to Eric’s point, most people don’t realize you can negotiate pretty much any quote with both shops and auto parts stores. I try and work it all the time.
October 20, 2011 at 11:00 am #447583sounds like your putting more into it then its worth..is it a wreck recovery, or are you just wanting to upgrade?..i would be hitting all the scrap yards..or even better=looking for a roll-over……
