Right now I am preparing to take some exams to get my Automotive Service Technician License. I have the necessary Text Books and information, as a result I study 6 days a week in preparation. I have under 1 year of shop experience in total. The shops that I have worked at do not provide proper training and all I ever did was tire repair, oil changes, clean the shop and drive customers areound. Subsequently, I get all my practical by watching repair videos and working on my vehicle. I hate to waste time. At this point I can do the following. [b]Please let me know where my skill level is at

I would say basic almost to intermediate as there is no evidence of electrical diagnostics (multiplex networking) or the ability to read and interpret scan tool PID data nor ability to read and interpret lab scope data.

This must be frustrating. Maybe it’s time for a new job? At a good shop, even if you are asked to do some grunt work, the senior guys need to be throwing you bones to keep you interested. In my experience that kind of volunteer teaching depends closely on your attitude. You need to chum up with a vet and hopefully he will take you farther. If there is nobody who can do that, then I would start looking elsewhere.

Thanks for the comment SPELUNKERED. Each day my frustration is being converted into more effective action. My skill level is advancing by leaps and bounds with a combination of formal education, videos and all the work that I do on my vehicle. I WOULD RATHER DIE THAN BACK OUT OF THE INDUSTRY. I have seen the rewards of my hard work and I am willing to do what it takes to continue to progress. I am a registered apprentice and my mind is totally focused on running my own shop. In fact, I do certain automotive jobs to make more money. To me this industry is so exciting. There is so much to learn and the rewards are there. You are right. Attitude plays a big role in everything we do. I enjoy working to my full potential. That is what will separate me from the crowd.
