      I have a 1988 VW Golf Cabriolet, Gas, 300,000+km.
Long story short, oil drained out of my oil pump pickup during an oil change, and after filling with oil again, I ran my engine with no oil pressure for about 30 seconds at 2000RPM.

Primed the oil pump after realizing, got pressure back, and everything *seems* fine now, no extra noise, not burning any oil that I can see…

      I feel like a massive idiot…

How much damage did I do?

Watch the oil pressure. If it is okay then drive some more.

Those engines are tough. Even if you got some bearing contact, it’s probably going to be fine. I have the same kind of engine as yours with 245k miles on it, which has been had momentary oil starvations numerous times with the engine at 4-5k RPM full throttle and it’s fine. I’ve also seen some engines more sensitive than yours get mistakenly run for 20-30 seconds without oil and never did any perceivable damage. I also had a 1986 VW Golf engine seize from overheating with a thermostat stuck closed, which, once I got it towed home to assess the damage, ran fine like nothing ever happened.

Yeah it’s probably fine. If it had a turbo it might be a different story. As longs as you weren’t reving the hell out of it you’ll be fine.

If you go onto you tube. You can see videos of kids in junkyards intentionally trying to kill car engines. I was very surprised to see that this process actually takes a fair amount of time (several minutes) even with the engine at or near redline.

If your oil pressure is good and there’s no oil coming out of the tailpipe then you are probably good to go. In any case if there’s a problem the car will let you know pretty quickly.
