That is the power of a honda engine.
January 26, 2012 at 11:00 am #447536They are really good cars, aren’t they? I am so impressed with them. My idea is to get a rather high mileage Honda Civic or Accord (say 180,000 to 230,000 miles) and go through it. Most auto buyers are afraid of cars with mileage such as this, but hondas that were well taken care of are just getting started. I can usually pick these up for $1000 to $2500. I usually hunt for a while to find one that has service records at a local service station or dealership. That tells me the care the car has received, though you can almost tell by appearance and talking with the owner. I then proceed to change out all of the fluids with Honda brand fluids, do any repairs (like maybe window regulators or timing belt /water pump jobs) and then put it on the road. I have always been thrilled with the results for the money outlay. I wish I would have known this earlier in life, because I made a lot of bad choices with vehicles that cost me dearly through the years. Eric the Car Guy told me I would be pleasantly surprised and boy way he ever right. Thanks, Eric, and thanks for this website!
January 27, 2012 at 11:00 am #447537Not to dismiss Hondas, but I feel the same way about Toyotas. The Japanese car makers really know their stuff.

+1
I totally agree although there is a few domestic brands that a very reliable too.
January 28, 2012 at 11:00 am #447539There is one huge problem and I see this a lot,the Japanese don’t give out any diagnostics including the European car makers to Mitchell and Alldata.Had this with a 2001 Eclipse, some was not working in the transmission and there were no diagnostics to go by in the Mitchell program. There is one Toyota car used car dealers don’t want, the Toyota Prius and I know one used car that mainly wholesales lost money on a couple. The batteries are special batteries and are more than the car is worth.I have seen a Honda with GM parts and Honda does have some junk out there. The transmission in the Honda Mini vans are junk,$2,500.00 for an used transmission if it is any good.Same in the newer Honda Accords and I won’t do another one called a pita with the V6 engine.
January 28, 2012 at 11:00 am #447540Hmmmm, 700,000 miles? You must still be breaking it in! V-)
I have two Honda Accords and I agree, they are long lasting vehicles. Unless you start having a rust issue, you can probably hit 800,000 easy.

I actually took a fledgling Intro to Hybrids class at my school. It was very informative. We did safe-downs on Hondas, Fords, Toyotas etc. We took a trip down to Toyota’s corporate offices in Blue Ash, Ohio. They had a concept plug in Prius. They also had stats on demos out there with over half a million miles with no battery issues at all. The battery packs are ~$2500. All in all, not a bad deal. Most cars are just dead at half a million miles.
January 29, 2012 at 11:00 am #447542In my opinion, the whole hybrid scene is just a temporary solution to cut down on pollution. Hydrogen powered vehicles will be the way to go once the engineers have the fuel cells better figured out.
January 29, 2012 at 11:00 am #447543I’m with Dreamer on this one, I see things like the Volt (gas/electric) and the Honda Clarity (hydrogen fuel cell) as really becoming mainstream for several reasons. 1) it doesn’t demand a gigantic infrastructure change, gas stations can be equipped with diesel and gas… might as well make room for hydrogen. 2) Oil companies can still regulate and sell you a product in a similar fashion to what they are already selling you. They haul it to stations using trucks, fill said stations, you drive up and fill up out of a pump (though a pressurized one).
Hydrogen is a readily renewable resource, and it is one of the most abundant elements in the universe.
That being said… it’s currently still very inefficient to create hydrogen from water, or to gather it by separating it (i.e. the power required to do such task is almost equal to the power you output). It is getting more and more efficient but still a limiting factor.
Beefy, sounds like a sweet class, curious though… did it make you want to go hybrid even more or were you turned off after taking the class?
February 1, 2012 at 11:00 am #447544Yep rust is the major problem with the Honda. Lately, transmission problems are becoming common problem for Hondas. Realistically, most people throws out the car after 200K miles or so due to rear & tear problems (and rust). I also pickup cars that has 100K+ miles at low cost and drive another 100K miles. Yes, cars can go more , but I really don’t want to keep the car beyond 200K miles. Most cars can get to 300K miles, but at what cost? (in both price of parts and labor)
February 1, 2012 at 11:00 am #447545hondas are def damn good, reliable, long lasting cars. i bought a 93 accord a while back and is by far the best car i’ve ever had. the way i see it is any car can last as long as you want it too if it is not neglected.
February 1, 2012 at 11:00 am #447546I agree with you guys. I, too, drive a 2001 Accord V6. I hope it runs well into the 100,000 kms. The thing that always bothers me is the transmission failure issue. As a result, I change the AT fluid very frequently. BTW, I am using the new Honda AT fluid DW1. It is supposed to replace the Z 1 that Eric mentioned. So far so good. Anybody out there having any issues with this new fluid?
February 18, 2012 at 11:00 am #447547As an avid Honda enthusiast, I too, am aware of the plague that rust can play. I would recommend using a salt neutralizer on the undercarriage for anyone in an area where the roads are salted.

Here us a link for a video of one brand. I personally haven’t used this one but have so with a similar product. It does work.
February 19, 2012 at 11:00 am #447548once the fuel runs out we will make cars with normal combustion engines that run on E100.
This will help for 30 years or so then say hello to long range electric and long range hydrogen.

i disagree. alldata has everthing pretty much on there. but when you say give out diagnostics, what are you refering to?
