      1997 Honda Accord LX 2.2L 4cyl engine

It has 156k miles but runs good.

I’m not sure if this is the cause of the problem i’m having, but when i start my car (cold…morning, sitting there for a while etc..) My engine sometimes shakes and then after a second it will fire right up, but when i look under the hood, the spark plug wire that goes into the spark plug well or what ever it is called wont stay in, it isn’t out but it does not stay in, (there is also oil on that rubber part in the well) but would that loose spark plug wire cause my engine to shake like it does, i have 0 knowledge on mechanic stuff so, if you have an idea i would greatly appreciate it.. thanks.

An oil fouled spark plug boot could cause the vibration. I would definetly start by addressing that problem, it is not difficult to replace the spark plug well o rings and eric has a step by step video on just that repair. While you are at it, throw in new plugs and wires.

Yea i watched that video a few hours ago, i just wanted to make sure that was a possibility of why my engine shakes, thank you for the response, much appreciated.

I agree with the above- I think what you may have going on is a misfire on one or more of your cylinders which would make your engine shake esp. when the car is cold and more oil may be on the plugs. change those seal (they’ll come in a kit for the valve cover) and also double check the torque of your plugs.

Depending on when it was last done (if it was) it may not be a bad idea to do the seal, plugs, wires & cap + rotor.

if the spark plug wire won’t stay on the plug. thats causing
the misfire which is causing the engine to shake. either crimp
the end a little to tighten or replace the wire set with with
OE or a good quality set.what vehicle are we working on?

What’s causing your spark plug wire tube to come out of its well can only be one thing: You have a loose spark plug that is allowing compression from the piston to push the tube out. Check for a loose spark plug or a stripped spark plug. If it is loose tighten it down (but not too much).

This has to be your problem, there’s just no other way the tube wire would come out like that.

In fact there is another way. The oil that’s leaking into the well is causing the spark plug wire to pop out, I’ve seen this many times. It may be more than the valve cover that’s leaking however, this video should help you.

Would the oil getting on those plugs possibly be able to leak out onto the ground under my car? Cause i keep leaving oil on the ground i thought it was my oil pan but the dealership said otherwise.

Not likely, only if you saw oil on the valve cover. To look for oil leaks you got to jack the car up and then look underneath. If there is oil anywhere on your engine, clean it up, drive the car for a number of miles and then check again. This is how you locate where the leak is coming from. Of course you may have spilled some oil and that could explain the oil under your car.

Well when i look under my car where the spots are coming from, you can see little builds up of oil where they are going to drip, and they are on the oil pan its self, but there is no holes in the pan, from what i can tell, there is crusted oil on a lot of things in compartment though

Clean it off, there’s no telling where its actually coming from unless you clean up the oil.

If it is from the oil pan then you need to replace the gasket and check the pan for any warping. I personally just replaced my oil gasket because it was leaking and found out the pan was warped, and replaced that too.

Clean it off though. Maybe even take it to a mechanic to clean it off if you can’t do it yourself. Sometimes you can just eye ball it and see where the leak is without cleaning anything though.

I took it to the dealer and asked how much it would cost to fix the oil pan thing and they were trying to charge me 250$, which to me sounds ridiculous, i just don’t know any mechanics around my area that are trustworthy.

That’s not such a bad price if they do everything right. Was that just for the gasket right? It took me 4 hours to put mine on.

Like I said though, make sure where the leak is coming from. If you are low on cash you can do 2 things; check and see exactly HOW MUCH oil you are losing from the leak and see how long you can go without doing the job (see if you can prolong); or 2, take the liberty of doing the job yourself.

Where do you live man, its 2 AM where I am now.

I’m in southern California, i just bought this car a week ago, i just got my license a week ago, i am only 18 and i am just now finding out all these costs, i have a decent paying job its just, i have other things i need to pay for, and they wanted 105$ to find where the leak was(That is just a base price) and then somewhere around 250$ to fix it depending on how to fix it, not to mention thats not my only problem, the problem with my spark plugs i kinda was able to fix myself, i guess you need to apply a little pressure to get the spark plug wires into the wells so they “snap in” i guess, sorry if that seemed like a stupid thing not to know, but my engine fires up just fine and doesn’t shake, but there is still the oil leak and oil on the ends of the rubber wires.

Wow, you’re very young. I am 22. Instead of paying 105$ for them to find the leak, buy some jack stands, a jack, and a manual for your vehicle. I recommend getting a Haynes manual, you can find them at the auto parts store. OR, even better and for free, you can download the OFFICIAL Honda manual for your model. All you need now is a working printer and with the right tools you can fix anything on your car.

                                  Here is the link:

                                  http://www.pdfasal.com/auto/1994-1997-honda-accord-service-manual.html

To download it, you want to scroll down to where it says “download”, then right click on on the file and select “save link as”. Then allow the 49 MB file to download.

Open it up and you will be filled with great understanding about your vehicle. No repair will be impossible with the right tools. It lays it out with diagrams so it doesn’t seem hard at all. Its so easy with the official manual.

The way i find leaks is a lot faster then cleaning the engine and driving for awhile.
But it’s so hard to explain, it makes me wish i video taped my instructor when he taught me how. Maybe next time i am leak hunting i will video tape how i do it.
