So I finally got my 85lb cylinder head back onto my 4.0L Jeep engine, I’ve tightened up the new head bolts, and I’m reassembling the rockers and pushrods. I get to pushrod #9 and drop it into place… and it just vanishes completely into the engine.

I imagine my expression at that point must have been a picture. I had no idea that could happen.

Thankfully, the rod had come to rest at an angle with its end just reachable through the hole in the cylinder head, and after a few tense minutes I was able to fish it out with a pair of needlenose pliers. But for a while there I had nightmare visions of having to pull the head all over again… :S

I had a noise in a Ford straight six – same motor that is in Eric’s Fairmont. I purchased a longer push rod. That is how you did valve adjustment on this engine. When I lifted the old push rod out the lifter, stuck on by oil, came with it and then fell back sideways. The only way to get to it was by pulling the head.

I only had one car back then so off I went on my bicycle to obtain a head gasket.
