whats the year make and model of the car?
check that the coolant level is full.I don’t
know if you have a valve in the line? feel the
in and out hoses going to the heater core.they
        should be hot.

coolant pressure is generated due to the thermal
expansion of water being heated in a closed vessel.

As suspected, the heater and a part of the joint in the main hose were pretty much clogged, restricting the coolant flow. Somehow strange because i’ve always kept the coolant clean, probably the previous owner wasn’t so careful. I cleaned them up and for now the heat seems to be working well.

Yes thanks for the update. Be sure to bleed the air out of the system after performing the repair. #1 cause of overheats or heating problems is air in the cooling system.

just another quick question, even though it’s not completely related to this.
Can a head crack be so severe to flood the cylinder over night to the point of preventing the engine from starting the next day? or a head gasket failure is more plausible? This problem got worse in less than a month, going from just random misfires at start-up to crank the engine for a minute to make it start, and still with misfires.
The model of the car is not important (actually it’s a diesel); it’s just a general question based on your experience.
                          Thank you!

I have seen coolant leaks into the combustion chamber cause a no start. This is a dangerous situation as liquids are not compressible. What this means is that if the cylinder fills up with coolant and the engine is cranked it could bend or break a connecting rod which would pretty much destroy the engine.
