I’ve been wondering what happens to you if you hurt yourself outside the work place and are not capable of doing your tasks at work?

3 weeks ago I hurt my back while I was off shift and returned to work after seeing a doctor and getting a note stating what I am able and not able to do. After talking with my supervisor and first aid officer a modified work duty list was created. I still get paid the same, and no time is lost.
This got me wondering what happens to other people out there, and if their employer would be willing to do this for them.
Tell me your stories of when you hurt yourself outside of the work place, or even in the work place and what have come from it.

It’s a mixed bag in my experience. I’ve seen employers be VERY accommodating similar to your situation and I’ve seen situations where people have been quietly ‘let go’ after a situation like that. One to note however, and this is not uncommon, is one where an injured technician ended up working as a service writer. This can be a blessing and a curse as both people that I’ve known that have done this have been pretty crappy service writers. You’d think they would have some understanding of the technicians who are still working in the heat and the cold but no, I didn’t see it. In fact when they got behind the desk they changed significantly and began to distance themselves from their former profession. In their defense I will say that there was some resentment from the technicians this person used to work with. I suppose once you cross that line you can never go back.

I’m curious to see what others have to say on this topic. Great topic BTW, thanks for posting it.

Shit, in todays world, the employer should just be happy the employee didnt come into work and act like they hurt themselves while on the job! Its sad, but I see it all the time.
