      Hello all,
I’m having a problem with the 4×4 on my ’90 ford ranger xlt super car v6 4.0L. The north east is getting a blizzard tomorrow into Sunday so I went to test my 4×4 this morning and I couldn’t get the warn hubs to click into the locked position. They rotate, just don’t “click” into the locked position. I need it fixed by tomorrow. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Probably going to have to take them apart and clean them up. Probably dirty, coated with heavy grease. When you reasemble them, either put them back with just a light coat of oil on the hub parts or we used to use a very, very light coat of vasoline one them.

+1 on the cleaning. I’ve had to do that a time or 2 myself. Just keep all the parts in order when you remove them.

Please keep us posted on your progress and post pics if you get the chance.

I took the hub out, but it was a different design of hub than i have seen in the past. It was bolted in between the rotor and the wheel, so i only cleaned the grease that were on the “teeth” because the other grease seemed important. Is that the case or should i go back and clean everything? Also when I tested it and spun the wheel in the locked position only the half shaft spun with the wheel, not the half shaft and front drive shaft like on the other side.

Look at this and see if it looks like yours.

I found a video online, that suggested taking the “hub locker body” off the truck, and cleaning it. Is this the right way to go? Or can you keep it on the truck? If this is the right way, how would one go about removing it? Also is any of that grease important, or can it all be cleaned off?
Thanks for all your help again!!!!

In your seventh pic you are down to the locknut for the wheel bearing. If you are not going any further (packing wheel bearings) you can wipe off some of that excess grease and you will be ok. You have the warn hubs, so just disasemble them like the video and clean it all up. Remember to go light on lubing those hub parts up. What you observed about the shafts turning is ok.
