Figured maybe starting this thread to see how each other’s weeks went and possibly vent to each other if need be.

Week/pay period started out extremely slow for me. Last 3 days we have finally had some work roll through the doors and it’s been nothing but busting hump trying to catch up and turn enough hours to break even. Today was the end of the pay period and when I left I still only had 72 flagged for an 11 day period. Though we all had low hours across the shop, but 2 days ago I was sitting around 50 so I feel I did good.

Had a new manager from an old Mazda dealer contact me also to come back, and two of the previous techs wanted me to come back to work with them. Not sure how I feel about that lol.

      How did yall’s week go?

A lot of old shit boxes in for emission work or suspension work. Not a bad week overall just boring routine work.

So far there was only one day when there was a shortage of work. I usually have electrical problems to work through. Jobs are handed to me because they are electrical or Duramax. No one else in the shop wants to work on a Duramax. Actually I don’t either, but I have made it clear that I won’t argue about the jobs they hand me, so I get them when the other guys whine about taking it.

Because I am given most electrical jobs, they gave me a “smoke under the hood and in passenger area” complaint. Turned out not electrical at all. It was a new Tahoe on which the compressor locked up and smoked the belt off of it. I replaced the compressor, expansion valve, condenser, and low side hose with a bunch of components on it and flushed everything else. Started it and got cool air just before leaving yesterday.

I am not making a lot of money, but I don’t need a lot of money. In fact I do what I can to help the younger guys make more money. They are the ones who need it more to keep food on the table and shoes on the baby.

I don’t whine about the jobs I get either. I have always just taken the good with the bad and some how it all evens out. I also think that because I don’t whine and complain about the jobs I do get there is a lot of gravy work that comes my way too. Like yesterday I had a rack replacement on a G6 I never worked on one of those but it payed 3.8 and I knocked it out in half that plus the alignment. Then I noticed the front brakes and leaking crank seal and I got those tacked on to my work order as well.

I’m the same way as you. I don’t whine about it, I just get it done. My foreman balances it out with flush gravy tickets also. I’m learning to be the duramax guy on our team, the other team already has two Duramax guys. And our team has 2 tranny guys with the 3rd tech next to me learning when he can about them. Plus I’m smaller and can fit into the more confined areas of the duramax especially on the busses that come in to us.

Today was the busiest day we have had in a long time. I never once stopped, and made good progress throughout the day.

                    Cammed,

Do the guys in your shop like working on Duramaxes? I am the only one in our shop that doesn’t hate working on them. I haven’t figured out why. I did an indirect injector yesterday and it seemed like a good job to me. I haven’t gone really deep into one yet, but if the time comes I don’t dread it.

Yes, the two guys on the other team do. I don’t mind it and quite honestly so far I like working on them. Some of the warranty jobs GM will
Get you on but there’s many things you can turn some good hours with them. I haven’t dove very deep myself yet, but have done a fair amount of indirect injectors, I’ve done an egr cooler on an 4500 express passenger bus, a ton of nox sensors, and a hand full of water pumps, and some other odd bits. I haven’t figured out why some of the guys don’t like working on them, other than the fact they are either scared to work on something new to them, or just don’t want to deal with it.

So far I have liked what I’ve done, except the egr cooler on the bus wasn’t the most fun experience but still broke even on it. Either way, I don’t turn them down for sure!
