It’s mostly just a straight up R&R however you will need a ‘pitman arm puller’ to remove the pitman arm from the steering box if it doesn’t have a rack and pinion set up. New steering boxes don’t come with the pitman arm so you’ll have to remove the old one from the steering box. If you have a rack and pinion however you don’t need to concern yourself with it because a steering rack does not use a pitman arm.

Just curious as to why you’re replacing the box. Is it because it leaks? Is it loose?

The most common repairs on those boxes are the sector shaft seals. ( the sector shaft is the shaft that comes out the bottom of the steering box that the pitman arm attaches to) These seals can be replaced without removing the box.

Every once and awhile I’ll see one that has a sector shaft that is too badly scored to seal properly. Only then would I be selling a whole new steering box.

          Cheers

That is true and they can be fun to get out also. Once you remove the retaining ring you can put one wheel up against the curb and turn the wheel into it till the seal pops out. Messy but fun.
