      Looks like I’ve got another leak in my exhaust system. This time its where the manifold tail piece (9) meets the catalytic converter (4). My question: It looks like the gasket (20) between those pieces are similar to the piece (19) that is used to seal the muffler and the silencer pipe (18). I remember I had a hard time removing that gasket because it rusted to the silencer pipe and ended up just leaving it. How do I go about removing that type of gasket? Looks like its made of some sort of cloth with wire wrapped around it. Can anyone explain?

        It’s called a donut gasket, and they sure do get corroded in place, but they’re actually easy to remove. Take a hammer and chisel or screwdriver and cut the donut, pointing the chisel along the axis of the pipe, not toward the center of the pipe. A couple of taps and it’ll break right apart. Then use a file and/or sandpaper to remove the remaining junk, and you’ll have a nice clean home for the next donut.

          Will I have any risk of dimpling the pipe if I hit too hard?

          I’ll have to give it a go. Sucks that its 20 bucks…

            Unless the pipe is completely rusted out, the force required to dent the pipe is far greater than that required to split the gasket. With a nice sharp chisel or big flat-head screwdriver, you really don’t have to hit it hard at all. Especially when you’re hitting along the axis of the pipe.

              Forgive me, but along the axis of the pipe means hit parallel to the pipe? Or perpendicular to the pipe?

                Nah. Submitted a profile to britishv8.org when I finished the conversion 8 years ago, but it never got posted. Guess my donation wasn’t big enough.
                Just rebuilding now, putting on some TR8 heads with air injection ports so I can get it through Colorado emissions. I don’t have time to do the work, let alone document it. I literally can’t remember if I pulled it into the garage a year ago or two years ago.
