I had a lot of fun making this video and I hope you enjoy it. Even though this video shows a Honda Element the procedure is similar with other vehicles. So what do you think of HID kits?

Eric, thank you, not only for the initial video, but also, and perhaps more importantly, for the RE video. I have thought about HID’s for quite some time, but had significant concerns about the light dispersion. I had read on some other forums about “casper shields” as being an answer to light scatter blinding people, but never found any source of said shields.
Your RE video shows the shields (they call them brackets I believe) which get installed into the housings before the bulbs. You also showed a good before and after shot, which makes it clear that the headlights with the HID bulbs have a very nice light distribution, and no obvious glare. You did a great job on the RE video of addressing the concerns that many have about upgrading to HID without adding a projector beam housing.

Thank you! I’m very happy to hear that you liked the videos and that they helped you formulate an opinion about HID’s. I didn’t expect the backlash that I got from this video and it’s nice to have some positive comments to offset that. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
September 20, 2013 at 8:50 am #550127Well, I might add that; here, in my country (Honduras) we don’t have regulations on car modification (such a bad thing) so you can drive with improperly installed HID and, in high beam and it will be perfectly legal. Personally, I’m neutral about having HID lapms, but, as far as Eric shown us, the lights didn’t cause any excessive glare. they’re just brighter. And I love how he explained about how the worries of most of the people here were not justified. It was a good job as far as it did work.
But, I should come with a doubt about having the ballasts installed the way Eric did. I guess, I might drill two holes per ballast, and probably mounted them somewhere else (I even seen a possibility, just aside the light reflectors, at the other side of the frame) well, at least it seemed to be big enough from the footage.
Anyway, great to have a HID… I’m seriously thinking of getting one for my Elantra. Nicely done Eric!September 21, 2013 at 9:56 pm #550356
OK I misspoke about temperature and brightness but I did say that you should check with your local laws to see if it would be legal to install such a kit on your vehicle. I also showed how you could easily switch back to your stock set up. I really liked this video because it was outside of my normal ‘repair’ video and I really like the result I got. It’s turning out to be one of my most disliked videos however, even more than the Synthetic vs Regular Oil video. I guess this is what is meant by ‘you can’t win them all’.
I do appreciate everyones insight, thanks for your input.
Eric, even though im new to the forums, ive watched most of your video’s. I agree with most of your views, you and I think alike. I have yet to watch a boring video. Stay dirty, stay safe.
September 28, 2013 at 9:30 pm #551855Hey Eric, just watched the RE: to this video and it was brilliant. The baby seal crack with the straight face was hilarious. Love the way you set people straight who obviously haven’t paid attention to the install like the whole deal with the reflection and projection beam deal. I’ve seen many auto instruction vids and I really have a hard time finding any as good as yours. You do a great job of explaining thoroughly as well as in a timely manner. Very easy to understand your instruction. I have learned a lot from you and have fixed cars based on your instruction. I recently put in a whole AC system in my sister’s car totally based on your AC manifold gauge video when u charged your system as well as your approach to dissembling parts of a car. Went off without a hitch. Thanks!
December 17, 2013 at 12:53 am #569574It has been a while since there was a post here, and I almost hate to drag it up again, but . . ..
The initial install was a bit over 7 months ago now, I believe, and I’m curious, aside from the early problem with one side failing to light, which was taken care of by Auto Fiend, how have the HID’s held up for you? Any more problems with them? Both bulbs and ballasts still working properly?
If they have made it through 7 months, it might be time for me to go ahead and spend some money banana:

The lights are still functioning perfectly. In fact, a couple of months ago I installed a set of HID fog lights. I also made video of that which should be out in the coming year. So far, so good.
Also, I haven’t had one person flash their lights at me since I’ve installed the lights.
January 23, 2014 at 2:29 am #576941Can you post the video of the new bulbs with better tint? When you showed it during the fog light video, the lights were on for a very short time and the true tint takes time until the bulb warms up.
I really want to install HID on the 99 Odyssey but I need to really see how the H4 reflector beam pattern looks like with 4300 tint. And yes, I am one of those guys who used to think all reflector HIDs are wrong.

Attachments:February 5, 2014 at 1:52 pm #579678Laws are made by politicians. Politicians do what they are advised to do.
Cars are designed by engineers who like to justify very complex systems over simple systems.
Car manufacturers will make more money to keep HID as an upmarket extra. Along comes Eric and the cat is wiggling out. Oncoming motorists are not dropping dead as he approaches with his successful mods….he just needs to keep the beams a little lower.
Now I have a top of the range car that has factory HID with all the auto levelling etc. and they are absolutely fantastic. However the leveling means the lights are actually higher than Eric’s as they skim along the road at headlight height.
In summary projector with levelling and HID are two distinct systems in question and one should not need to be a prerequisite of the other.
October 10, 2014 at 7:28 pm #636804How are you liking the HID kit from motorfiend.com? I was thinking about ordering a kit from them for my 05 tacoma. Have either other bulbs or ballasts died yet?

I have 3 sets of HID’s from Motorfiend in 2 of my vehicles. One set has been in for about a year and a half, and the other for about a year. I’ve had no issues up to this point.
October 11, 2014 at 6:50 pm #637029Cool! Think I will have to get one for me!
November 29, 2014 at 10:29 am #647000Hey Eric, saw your video on this, and I’m with you on this subject. I first installed these in a 98 Buick Regal and in the 6+ years of driving that car, I think maybe one or two flashed their lights at me. otherwise, no problems even with law enforcement (SC)
When the head gasket blew on the Regal I pulled the ballast out to move them over to my 05 Impala, The bulbs themselves were in dire need of replacement, not very bright at all. Anyways, ordered new 5000K bulbs off of amazon for $12 and just installed them, after over an hour of night time driving along a busy highway, 0 flashes.
Its not so much a matter of the housing its in, thought that plays a bit into it, but the aim of the headlights probably matters alot more.
Oh, and Eric, you might want to touch on the topic of replacing parts at certain intervals even if they “still work”, those old bulbs were probably worse than halogen bulbs but still worked.
