I’ve been talking a lot about the problems with technician pay lately so I decided to talk about a possible solution in this video. I look forward to your comments.

I agree with your advice on a decent write up. At toyota we select operation codes from techdoc where possible (tech site) and include them in the write up, that ensures we get paid correctly for what we’ve done. With warranty, at toyota at least, you don’t get paid for diagnosis, only the repair. If part of that diagnosis process includes for instance removing a dash to check a connection then include every single step in the write up and you’ll get paid for it. Manufactures will pay for anything that can be justified, so justify it in a good write up.

Unfortunately most dealers have switched to ADPs and MPI Edges online electronic programs. We no longer write up ROs, we just electronically flag a line that has been pre-approved. No way to request certain time or more time for rusty things. You get book for everything. Never even see the service writers anymore. You mark off recommendations in MPI and then send it to them electronically, then you wait for it to go green for approved or gray for declined. If it’s approved you refresh the RO and see what was approved and what lines were added. The lines already tell you what you are being paid for the job CP or warranty, doesn’t matter. CP book times are going down as well, they just slashed HG jobs from 12 to 10 on us.

Man you gotta find a different place to work. It’s worse than I thought. Is there anything you can do with your district rep? I remember I was in pretty tight with mine and he was pretty helpful in getting me straight time when I needed it. Mostly because of the write ups I did.

I am looking, very hard, I have tried going above my service manager to get fair compensation for my work. I flagged 61 this week because of guys on vacation, so it’s not like I can’t handle the workload. I deserve more.

I think you do too. It pains me that you’re so miserable where you are. You seem like a competent caring technician and I’d hate to see that go to waste because of the greed of others.

that report that W5 did was the same thing that Pepboys wanted me to do as a service writer for them, I got something like 8.50/hr but I felt that my personal reputation was on the line as well, if those customers ever came back i’d have to explain myself, not the boss.

So I got in trouble for not pushing things on the customer that the mechanics knew they didn’t need but the boss wanted sold. I got out because it felt so wrong what they were doing it to hard working families.
As you know, there is a difference in pushing something that doesn’t need fixin’ and putting it on the work order as a recommendation for future work, now they may take their car to a different shop but if you treated them right, did good work, they didn’t feel ripped off then why would they go to a differnt shop?
Seemed to me that the bosses there forgot that your “word” or reputation used to mean something, I always thought myself as a diplomat between the boss, the mechanic, and the customer. A lot of times I would have to balance trying to get the work for the mechanic and defending the customer from my bosses. Where I would do this was in PM work, if the machanic thought it was time i’d push harder for PM work, from the stand point that it had to be done anyway now was that time to do it, or if they were in the same area of a car, add this or that part. Air filters, things like that.

I know this was a little too wordy, but I really liked the topic and wanted to put something out there.
