Hi ETCG and all you other folks.

I have a 1997 Honda CRV that runs great, drives nice and straight and hasn’t even had the headlight lenses fog up. I am at 210K miles and I would like to get to a million really. But what would be a good maintenance/diagnostic schedule/checklist to get me from the 200K to 300K window. Is there a pdf somewhere that I could run down to say “yea, now I feel comfident that she will serve me well”? Is there a page in a service manual that takes you that far out?

Thanks for any and all comments/suggestions. They are appreciated!

      Regards, SPRHNL

P.S. Love a car that does what it’s supposed to.

https://www.openbay.com/maintenance/1997-honda-cr-v – Just adjust the slider to different mileages to see what should be done. Assuming you do not know for sure, just play around with it.
Typically, the maintenance schedules for most cars is going to be similar. The maintenance will just be different intervals.

Oil changes is number one. Other things are – the rest of the fluids, filters, tire condition/pressure, brakes, wheel bearings, struts/shocks, ball joints, tie rods, drive shafts (rubber boots tend to wear out and crack), motor mounts (may or may not be a problem depending…) vacuum hoses, PCV valve (easy on some, PITA on others)

200 is just about the life of most cars.
Yes you CAN keep it on the road as long as you want but the question is – how much are you willing to spend in repairs?

Eventually you start running into serious crap like when the transmission needs rebuilt setting you back almost $3,000 (they eventually do wear out) or when things start to rust out really bad, engine wears and starts burning/leaking more oil, interior starts looking like a homeless guy’s clothes…

Sometimes you hear, “I have 300,000 on my car” but it may not be on the first engine or trans.

If your car is still running strong, of course hang onto it. Just keep in mind that when real problems come up (despite your best maintenance efforts) it may come a day when you have to decide if you really want to keep fixing it.

Thank you very much! That was sage advice and I really appreciate the link. I am going to bookmark it. I will say this about the CRV I own. It is built incredibly well. I am keeping it forever if I can (ie Motor Blow).

          Thank you again.

            246k on mine 🙂

            Runs like Day 1.

Shooting for as high as it can go without succumbing to these roads ..

The biggest factor to if a car is going to make it from 200K to 300K is how it was treated the first 0-200K. It also depends on just plain luck of the draw that all the parts are strong. My truck is on 287K, I’m looking for it to make it closer to 400K but general wear happens, even though I have maintained it well. Might have to rebuild it before then, it’s consuming some oil and MPG isn’t what it once was. Like others have said, changing the oil properly is important. Using the correct oil is also very important. Using the correct filter is improtant as well. Getting running issues fixed properly helps a lot too. Spark knock kills a lot of engines and I hear it all of the time. Every time it does that it’s like a hammer slamming the top of the pistons sending a shock down through the entire assembly.
