Not a whole lot of speculation with this one. It’s just a straight up maintenance video. Comments welcome.

Transmission fluid, especially automatic transmission fluid, formulation is truly a “dark art”. I’m not certain that even the OEM know the exact formula as many additives are blended in to make the transmission operate properly (less so on manual transmissions).

Like Eric said, always use the OEM fluid, which is why I would never have transmission fluid changed at an independent shop unless they show you they have the OEM recommended fluid (check your owners manual) in stock and it is written on the work order.

Q: How often should you change your manual transmission gearbox oil?
I have a 2013 Toyota Corolla with 30K so far that I plan on keeping for many many years and I’m a preventive maintenance type of guy.

Check the service manual or owners manual. They usually list the interval and the type of fluid used. Newer vehicles usually have extended service intervals BTW.

Whether auto or manual, buy the correct product for your car in the correct quantity and instruct the workshop to use that in your car and ask them to leave the empty bottles in your car. That way you don’t need to be concerned about someone using the incorrect product in your car. Going to an authorised dealer is not always an absolute guarantee that they will always use the correct product. I am aware of some authorised new car dealer service centers – not Honda – in my city(and in two others) who do not always use the correct engine oils in customers cars (and they have been caught out by the customers ) so I would never be totally sure they will always use the correct product in transmissions either.
