Hi Pros, I want to buy a used Impala or Passat from Hertz. Those cars are usually 2 years old with around 30K~40K miles.
It’s said those cars may be abused by some renters, so it’s risky to buy one. And some problems may be hidden since Hertz has mechanics to repair those cars but not shown in Carfax.
I can think of compression test to check the engine, but any suggestions to check conditions of engine, mechanical, etc?
      Thank you. 🙂

There are thousands of Chev Impalas on the market with 30-40,000 miles on them.

Just go find a good one owner example that has not been pranged with all service records and have a pre purchase inspection done on it before you put any money down on it.

Stay away from ex rental cars and ex corporate fleet vehicles and you will be fine.

Stay away from rental cars. There are too many nice low milage one owners floating around to risk it. Our local hertz and enterprise has us service all of their fleet vehicles. They only want to put what they absolutely have to into their vehicles to keep them in service. Everyone gets the mindset that it’s a fleet vehicle from a big company when in reality it might get its regular oil change and some tires once in a while.

Some things to look for are check the battery cables over really well. They have problems with internal corrosion. The racks tend to leak around the bulk head/body and usually a squeak can be heard in the vehicle when turning the wheel slowly due to the seal on the shaft going to the column being dry.

Check your valve cover and intake gaskets as that is a very common thing along with the rear main seal if you can get under it. Once in a while you will see a crankshaft seal leaking also. Other than that usually just have some a/c temp actuator failures and the recirculation door actuators fail fairly often.

Other than that the impala’s are great vehicles. Just like any other car look it over well. Just some insight and a few things to check for you on day to day things that I see on them. Goodluck
