      Hi Eric, and everyone else,

I didn’t find a topic on this so hear I go:

I’m in the market to purchase a 98-02 Accord, and was wondering what to look for ?
(Besides the usual stuff, brakes, axles, tires, struts, fluids, vin tags on all the body panels, timing belt, and road test)

Is there any thing I should be looking for ? I’ve herd ball joints can be a weak area.

I’m not new to cars, actually I worked at a Toyota dealer for 3 years. My experience with Honda has been limited to

Transmissions seem to be a problem in those vehicles. particularly the V6 models.

Theres a few posts in the service area with posters and there Accords having transmission problems.

Thats the only reason i know C8-)

+1 on dreamer2344, auto transmissions are the main problem for these cars. Stick shift would be more reliable

My old boss had a nearly mint 98 black one that blew the transmission.

The other one that comes to mind is, depending on where the car has spent it

+2 on dreamer2344. I purchased a used 2001 honda accord 32000 miles in 2004. Thus, far the vehicle has been immensely reliable; however, with that said, the only major hiccup I’ve had is with the transmission. The original transmission failed at approximately 60000 miles. Honda agreed to replace it with a remanufactured one at no cost of my own. This remanufactured transmission failed at approximately 120000 miles. This time, honda did NOT agree to replace it. I paid $3000 for a replacement NEW transmission from a 3rd party manufacturer. Currently, I have roughly 188000 miles without any major issues.

                    I have a 2000 Accord (4 cylinder automatic) myself.

In my almost 2 years of ownership, my car has never given any major issues. I got the car at 143k miles, and I’ve only had to replace a few wear and tear parts.

That being said; I’d advice for you to get a manual. The V6 versions are known to have weaker transmissions. The 4 cylinder auto’s seem to be fine. Mine hasn’t given any issues, and I have not came across any strong evidence pointing to the 4 cyl auto transmissions being weak.

If you wind up with an auto, as with any car (especially this one) try to find out if the car has been properly maintained. I actually drain and refill my auto trans fluid at least once a year.
