I need to tighten a crankshaft bolt. I need to figure out a way to keep the crankshaft from turning, so I can torque the bolt. It requires 112ft lbs. I might try a strap wrench on it. The Haynes manual says to stick a screwdriver in the flywheel/drivewheel teeth through the access hole. Does anyone know where the access hole typically is?

My other option is to just use my Harbor Freight electric impact gun. Do you know how much torque it would apply to the nut? I don’t want to over tighten it and cause problems.

What transmission does the car have?
If it’s a manual just leave it in gear
Worse case.. remove the starter motor and get access to the flywheel from there.
HF 1/2″ electric impact states 230 ft. lb. of max torque

Not sure what engine you have, but this is what I did with my 2003 2.4L. The pulley for the PS pump has access holes for the pump mount bolts. I pulled one mount bolt out enough to stop the pulley from turning, and the belt tension was enough to get the crank bolt on.

Not sure if this will work in your application, but it’s a thought.

If you have access to an impact, use that and run it down. Not saying torque isn’t important, but in 20 years of running them down with impacts I have yet to see a problem.

I do the same as eric, but know your tools. I would be hesitant to continue letting it impact after you see it’s mostly stopped turning if you have a higher powered gun. They don’t need to be so tight that the bolt will snap with one more impact, but you obviously don’t want them too loose where vibrations will rattle them out. I’m sure you’ll be safe with whatever you have, but as i mentioned, just know the tools power limitations and proceed.
