Hey,
Just wanted to see how you guys liked your power probes and what you use them the most for.
I just bought a pp3 off ebay with the combo kit.
Guess I jus got sick of the oldschool way of using a test light haha. -

Post up some pictures. I believe Beefy has one too.
How much did you pay for it?
I have seen them used a few times on TV and in the ETCG video’s but never in person.
January 27, 2012 at 11:00 am #447023I have the powerprobe 2, and it’s awesome. I use it for all sorts of things, like the obvious checking power and ground in circuits. My favorite feature is the ability to provide power to cooling fans etc, and the ease of testing relays with it.
January 27, 2012 at 11:00 am #447024Ok Will do.
I has playing with it for hours today finding some problems with the headlight wiring in the rabbit.
I can’t find many good diagrams for it though so I’ll have to pick up a bentleys manual for it soon.
A test light and the PP3 makes a great pair actually, I put the end of the test light on the end of the wire i was testing under the hood for the head lights then
hooked the ground clip to ground and went inside the car and applied power to the wire to see if the light lights up telling me the wire is not broken.January 27, 2012 at 11:00 am #447025Oh yeah.., i got a good deal on it. shipped to my door for $132 bucks!
It was a new old stock I guess, the sticker on the case was peeled a bit that’s all.January 28, 2012 at 11:00 am #447026Quoted From Trcustoms719:

January 28, 2012 at 11:00 am #447027Heres two pics of it (sorry for the crappy quality).
January 28, 2012 at 11:00 am #447028Wow, you got a case with it too?
That’s a great deal! Thanks for uploading the pictures.
January 28, 2012 at 11:00 am #447029Have one and never got to use it yet.I went to a class on CAN vehicles last year,a power probe is never used on CAN vehicles,2004 and current for a reason. Can smoke up to 4 computers. There are two wires twisted together that are never probed.

That’s also same too with using test lights on reference circuits, as well as CAN and LIN Bus networking circuits that use the twisted pair and single wire design.
You have to know what you are doing with electrical diagnosis these days.
CAN bus systems actually were around in 1986 C8-)
January 30, 2012 at 11:00 am #447031I have a power probe 2. I don’t use it as much as I should. When I do use it I mainly use it to power or ground circuits. Excellent diagnostic tool.

I think i would go that route instead of the PP3 as the previous version is only $70 from Amazaon and my DVOM is always within reach.

On E-bay you can get a new pp3 without any extras and no case for About $110 bucks i think.
I would never be without a pp3 now that i got one. 😛February 27, 2012 at 11:00 am #447034AnonymousI bought a PowerProbe 3 on sale about 6 months ago along with the separate probe kit and I haven’t even taken them out of their cases yet. lol. I’m hoping that when I need it, I’ll like it. Based on everything I’ve heard, it’s the king of test lights. L:D
February 27, 2012 at 11:00 am #447035im too poor so i use a test light haha

I have a PP-III, and I like to use it most of the time. But I am wary of sending 12V power to a circuit that might not be able to take that voltage. And I certainly don’t want to fry any computers. So, if I want to apply power to an end device such as a light or fan I will disconnect it from the power side of the circuit first and then apply power. You still need to study the circuit diagram to be sure the device in question takes 12 volts. Many diagnostic devices are on a 5 V baseline, but I can’t see ever finding a use for applying power to those.
I really like the two-tone singing whine that it gives when testing fuses. You can test a whole bank of fuses in a minute, without taking the fuses out to look at each one. As long as you are just on the diagnostic side of the built in DVOM I think it is safe….
wafredrick, what do you mean when you describe twisted wires? Where are the twisted wires to watch out for?
