how can u tell if motor are bad

My 2004 Pacifica, sometimes shifts really hard out of first and back down into first. It usually happens the worst when I have been driving along time when I have to start and stop a lot. I think the motor mounts are something that I should check before condemning the transmission. But I am not exactly sure how to go about that

If motor mounts are bad it can cause a variety of problems. Rough idle, clunking when you put it into gear, sometimes clunking when shifting. As for the transmission, you might find information here that can be helpful.

I’d make sure you didn’t need a transmission before I went looking at the mounts.

Your complaint is common on all Chryslers with that transmission. If you have recently had the battery disconnected the transmission will need a quick relearn with a scan tool. If the battery was not disconnected it might need a reflash with the latest software. Has the fluid been changed with ATF+4 only? Anything else but ATF+4 will cause different problems with shift quality.

I would have a dealer check for a software update and a relearn if necessary.

Not sure on maintenance history have had it for 1 year, no fluid change… I feel like with older things introducing new things can cause trouble.. I guess I will call the dealer to see about your suggestions. Thanks

The dealer may be an expensive option. You might also consider a reputable independent repair shop.
