I recently replaced the rear wheel bearings in my 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and throughout the process I was very aware of the possibility of the spider gears falling out of the diff with the pinion shaft and axleshafts removed. As it happened the spiders didn’t fall out, but the thrust washer behind one of them did (which I didn’t discover until I was just about to button the diff back up), which led to an interesting few minutes trying to slide it back in without dislodging anything.
Would you consider a video that covers exactly what to do in the worst-case scenario of the spiders falling out? I’m the kind of DIYer who wants to be as informed as possible before attempting something new, but I couldn’t find anything on YouTube that clearly demonstrated how to replace spider gears in a diff.
Lots of people on forums said something vague like “It’s no big deal, you’ll figure it out”, but even just a 2-minute video clearly demonstrating the process would go a long way to inspiring confidence in people like me 🙂
