Hose replacement

When should radiator and heater hoses be replaced?

The hoses on my daughter’s 16 year old Chrysler still look and feel fine. They are not cracked, nor do they feel mushy, or brittle.

I know that on 1960’s era cars, they needed to be replaced once they developed cracks. The newer hoses seem to be much more durable.

      Thanks,

      Kirk M

Still the same today. Look for cracks and for the hose to bloat (get fat or bubble) in areas. Or replace just to feel reassured

Modern rubber is much better than it used to be and will generally last the life of the car if no outside events effect them. Something like an oil leak, can quickly ruin a rubber hose, or if oil gets in the coolant.

That being said, 16 years is heading toward the end of a car’s intended life span and most of the rubbers are probably getting old. If you can afford the time and effort to replace them, it’s cheaper to be prepared.
