I realized today on my Daewoo that my MPGs are horrid i am suppost to get 26MPG city im getting 15. 1 possible cause: Tune up. My spark plugs which are past due for a change. But I have also realized my brake issue is in the rear brakes. When i mash the pedal i head a clunk in rear. Also my brake pedal is way out of adjustment. What should i work on 1st?

Are you getting any error codes?

Poor mileage can be caused by many things, a few of which are: bad/wrong plugs, dirty air filter, Clogged fuel injectors, bad O2 sensors, vehicle not going into closed loop (for a variety of reasons) and one of my personal favorites… THE DRIVERS RIGHT FOOT!!! :woohoo:

After a cursory inspection I would get a scanner and look at your LTFT concerning your mileage.

About prioritization…Uhhh… If the car still runs and you need it for transportation, I would fix the brakes first…. They are what is keeping you and 3000 lbs from ramming into a brick wall/car/truck etc…..

As for millage, if your still running around with your check engine light on, you really need to grab those codes… I seem to recall discussing the MAF sensor at one point, the MAF sensor will not only cause lowered power but can also cause really bad millage, then it can also trip the O2 sensors because they will be reading to lean/to rich!

Get your codes read at auto zone, or get a $30 dollar cheap reader from ebay, and get codes, if the MAF is “bad” fixing your MPG could really be as simple as using a $5 can of MAF sensor cleaner (ONLY MAF CLEANER, DONT TRY DEGREASER OR BRAKE CLEANER)

If it is your O2 sensors it is either the sensors are dirty/bad, the catalytic could be bad or it could even be plugs, some cases O2 sensors can be cleaned with electrical cleaner…

Even something as simple as a vacuum leak can harm your gas millage… Tune ups can solve problems, but are not always THE problem…

But like said above, if it’s choosing between brakes or good MPG, go with the brakes…

          Cheers!

Brakes first and foremost. It won’t matter a hill of beans what kind of mileage the car gets if you kill yourself in it.

Bad fuel economy can be any number of things. I picked up nearly 8 miles per gallon by fixing a stripped out exhaust manifold stud hole.

Once you have taken care of the brakes, check (and replace if necessary) the air filter, spark plugs, cap / rotor (if you car has them) and wires. If there are any diagnostic codes, find out what they are, and fix what needs to be fixed. Once that is all done, report back on what your mileage is.
