I have been trying to get on at the shop down the road for some time now. I know the company pays lube techs hourly, and lube techs that can do a little mechanic work hourly plus 10% of labor, and full techs 40-45% of labor with no hourly. So I got a call Tuesday morning as I was walking out the door, he wants me to come down and talk to him that day. So I call my current employer and tell him I will be late.
I get there and everything goes good. They have 6 paid holidays and after a year 40hrs vacation time and 40hrs personal time paid. Then we get to the pay, he doesnt hire anyone in as full techs. He keeps 7 people in the shop, all do LOF and tires and 3 of them do the “mechanic” work. So he offers me 9.50/hr plus 10% of labor. What a waste of time. I would have to do about 15hrs more than I average at my current job to make the same money, plus all the tires and LOF that wouldnt count toward my commission pay.But this isnt the worst job offer I had. I was offered $7/hr flat rate, back when minimum wage was $5.25/hr. I was told I would have to write my own estimates and anything I left out would come out of my pocket.
