I have a 2000 Civic EX with the 5 speed manual transmission. I really have no problems shifting into any gears except reverse most of the time and occasionally some other forward gears. However, sometimes it feels like I am hitting multiple walls when shifting into first at a stand still. However, usually that feeling is intermittent and goes away after it has been driven. I get not grinds.

Today I was poking around the bottom of the car and I noticed that the stationary portion of my shift linkage (the linkage without the rubber boot) had a bit of play in it. I’d describe the play as maybe 1/16th of an inch in all directions…maybe more. The shifter was in first gear.

So my question: Is this normal?

      Thanks a lot!

If the vehicle is rolling when you’re trying to put it into first you will encounter resistance. In fact, it may not want to go into gear at all. It’s kinda the way it’s set up. More info on manual transmission issues here.

Usually that feeling is at a dead stop. I rarely put it in first if I am rolling.

Also I believe the hydraulics to be alright as well.

I like the link, lots of information.

What about that linkage though? That supposed to have some slop in it?

This isn’t my picture or car but it is this linkage.

Unfortunately the image didn’t come up for me. You can actually add images when you make your post. Just use the upload function just below where you type your text. That said, yes, loose linkage can cause that. However it might also be a clutch problem. If the clutch does not fully release it can cause the same symptom. You might read through the article I posted for you as it has information on how to diagnose these types of problems and may help you find the cause of the issue.

            Keep us posted.

              Interesting..link works for me. I’ll re-try it.

I feel like it isn’t the clutch for a few reasons. I do not get any grinds going into reverse. I’ve also gotten the tip to release the clutch a hair while applying force into the reverse gate. I get a grind then.

Also I am starting to get the typical bearing noise for honda manual transmissions. That doesn’t start until I am almost two inches or something off the ground.

The linkage that I am having the play in I read that it is a stabilizer rod.

again, not my car, not my picture but its that bushing that I am seeing play in

You are correct, that’s not the shift linkage but the locator rod. That said, some play there is normal. I don’t know if you’ve read through the article I posted for you but in it it states that it’s very important to use Honda fluid in Honda transmissions. Failure to do so can cause transmission issues. Particularly with shifting.

Yes I read the whole part about honda manual transmissions. I do use the Honda MTF. I did buy the car used so I can only imagine how the previous owner’s driving habits were like.

How much play is acceptable? Do you think this could contribute to lousy reverse engagement?

I have a Mitsubishi and a Subaru, both manuals, and in either car I have to pump the clutch pedal once before I can get into reverse.
