      i have a honda prelude 89 fuel injected car,, can anyone help me out figure out whats wrong? as i dont know much about mechanic and already spent quite some money on my car..the problem its having is that when i start the car the car seems to sputter for like 5 seconds then the engine light comes on and it seems to work fine,,then when i press on the gas pedal it seems to hesitate and then it accelerates, but it seems to like jerk..as if i was almost flooring the gas pedal,, once the rpm is high or the car is rolling it works fine,, this only seems to happen when i come to a complete stop or when im really close to a complete stop, once im like up to 10mph it works fine..i took it for a dignostic test and the mechanic said it could be a bad head gasket..but i took it to another mechanic and he said its the egr valve that is not working,, i must say before this the cars would simply turn off if it wasnt running but i had a mechanic change the intake and it works alot better but it still not good(also the spark plugs seem to be fouled, it seems as if they have a bit of carbon build up)….any information is greatly appreciated i tried to be as descriptive as i could, thanks..

          You need to inspect the idle valve locatable beside the throttle body and the 02 sensor that tell to the computer how many oxygen you will need to keep you engine running. The idle valve regulate the amount of air when you stop. Then, you need to read the code whit a OBS I tools to be sure which sensor is not functioning correctly.

            can you read any stored codes and post them.

              i cant get the code, the 89 doesnt have it in that place, i read on another forum that it has it next to the map sensor in the engine bay and i think i found it, but the engine light doesnt blink..it just seems to blink once and then turns off, i already replaced the oxygen sensor, so im thinking it might be the iacvalve..why wont my diagnostic work though 0.o

                        [quote=”college man” post=52752]here is a code chart.

                        http://www.preludezone.com/3rd-gen-honda-prelude/2824-how-check-check-engine-light-codes-3rd-gen.html%5B/quote%5D

                        Those codes are also available on this site. 🙂

                        That said don’t assume it’s the MAP sensor, in fact I consider that unlikely. To me it sounds like your engine is out of time mechanically which would cause the MAP sensor codes (3 & 5). Also check the vacuum lines going to it for leaks.

                        Code 6 is for coolant temp. This could be due to air in the cooling system. It could also be a bad sensor as they do go bad from time to time. A bad one can effect engine performance.

                        The code 14 is for the IAC valve but that could also be the result of incorrect mechanical timing.

                        I recommend you pull the valve cover and upper timing cover and check the timing marks. Also check to see if the timing belt is loose. If it is loose it can also cause those issues.

                        Keep us posted on your findings.
