I have a 2003 odyssey and about a month ago i got the infamous flashing D, i scanned it, got P1740 which I see is the 4th clutch pressure switch, the van has 164000 miles with the original tranny, it shifts really good, no slippage, so im pretty sure its just a bad switch, Im going to change my tranny fluid too because it looks like motor oil, according to carfax the last fluid change was at 100k, so is the honda procedure the best way? drain and refill 3 time with a 15 minute drive in between, and yes i am going to use honda atf. plus is there any tips/advice I can get because this is my first time working on a honda, Its not the first time ive done car work, just the first time I worked on this odyssey, Thanks! oh and does anyone know the honda part # for the 4th clutch pressure switch, I called them but they didnt even know what I was talking about?

There is a link on this site to a .pdf file on how to replace switch –

And you are pretty much good to go on the procedure on the fluid change.

However, with it being black in color, you will be rolling the dice draining and refilling that fluid.

Well I had to drive it to Ohio today and I heard that most of the bad things that happen with that code happen on the highway, so I bought the switch yesterday and changed that, no mire code hoo ray,i did drain and refill 3 times, he fluid still isn’t red but its reddish which is what I was aiming for because I want to gradually renew the fluid, since Ihahave heard about the new fluid breaking up deposits from the old fluid and clogging the transmission up I will probably do another drain in a few thousand miles. I wouldn’t have ever let it go that long but we just got the car in July, it had 158000 on it when I got it has 164000 now. The van runs even better now, happy holidays everyone, Thanks!

Yea keep us posted because to be honest it’s likely you’re going to need to replace the transmission at some point. I’ve dealt with several of them and the P1740 pretty much means you need a transmission. I’ve seen what you’re experiencing after the fluid change where it’s good for a while and then just flat out fails. Keep an eye on it and keep us posted, you might get lucky.

Well I am quite disappointed to reopen this topic but here I am again. So about a thousand miles ago I replaced my 4th gear pressure switch and “re-newed” the fluid as best I could. So a few days ago I stopped at a stop sign and when I accelerated, nothing. It wasn’t really slipping i don’t think because it didn’t move at all just acted like it was in neutral, kinda weird. so i let off the gas and the rpm went down to idle than I gave it gas and it went back to normal. So i kinda just shrugged it off, well my mom drove it yesterday and she turned into the library which is a pretty steep hill, and it did it again but this time while it was moving, I don’t know if it was slipping because I wasn’t with her but she said it was like it shifted into neutral when she went up the hill. The weird thing is when it happened to me it was on flat ground. Other than that it still runs beautifully at 165k. oh well the one thing that happened the day we got it. The van was parked facing down on my steep driveway (something I would never do, Dads fault) and my mom got in it and I don’t know what she was thinking but she put it in reverse, let off the break, the van started to drift forward since the driveway is so steep, it drifted down like 6 feet then she floored it in reverse and backed out of the driveway, nice , right? ever since when you put it in reverse it makes a horrible kick into reverse and the front of the van hops up. the emergency brake works good, and i always put it from drive to neutral, apply the e brake, let it hold, then put it into park, so the tranny isn’t “locked up”, I don’t know if that has anything to do with it, torque converter maybe? Thanks! sorry its kinda long.

Thanks for the response, since I replaced the 4th gear pressure switch a thousand miles ago the van has run great, I have never had P0780 and I just checked and I don’t have any fault codes now, the tranny fluid is at the right level, its still red, and doesn’t smell burnt. Like I said its weird its not slipping really, It just acts like it goes from drive to neutral on occasion, Hoping its a solenoid, or something, if not I will replace the transmission in the summer. It just seems strange that it drives normal, accelerates fine, shift smooth, but then it seems whenever it should downshift into first it goes into neutral, but if you let off the gas it goes back into first and goes just fine. Thanks!

There is one hope. Since the fluid was so dirty it might be that the screen under the solenoids is clogged. The solenoids in question are the ones on the top of the transmission right under the throttle body. Once you remove them you will notice a screen in the rubber gasket. If it’s clogged clean it and recheck for the condition. I think there is also a screen under the dual solenoid on the front of the transmission as well that you might want to check. That said those transmissions have a very high failure rate due to sticking valves in the throttle body and overheating of the second gear clutch drum. I recommend you only use Honda fluid and also make sure that you’re checking the fluid level with the engine OFF not running.

                          Keep us posted.

Thanks for responding Eric, I am hoping its just the screens you speak of, The fluid I took out 1k miles ago was really dirty, I would be really surprised if it was the tranny because as Im sure you know there are plenty of steep hills in Pittsburgh and it climbs them perfectly, but I am well aware of the failure rate and I was when I bought it, but this problem has only happened 2 times where seems like when it should downshift instead it goes into neutral and its not like a slipping, but it sounds, and revs like its in neutral. I have watched all of your vids on your odyssey too. when I did the 3x drain and refill I did use Honda fluid, and I have been checking it at normal temp with the engine off and on level ground, and its always at the right level nor does it smell burnt. thanks a lot Eric I will look into the screens sometime this week and let you know what my findings are. Thanks again!!
