Once it starts getting warmer my 88 honda is going to do what it always has and idle really fast after about 15 min of driving, then while I am driving in town, 35mph, frequently decelerating and accelerating the car will start overheating, dancing between halfway and hot until I get back to about 55mph again then stays at normal until 35mph, then repeat every single day.

I’m going to do all the tips Eric had for overheating issues once I get a chance, but anyone have any suggestions of what may be going on?

The running hot is causing the idle swings.
couple things to check.are the cooling fans
working? is the coolant full and free of air?
has any coolant work been done? when was the
last time the thermostat and radiator cap was
        changed?

College man made some very good points. also make sure to test your eng coolant temp sensor as these will cause high idle probs when bad.

The cooling fan is working just fine, I do keep the coolant full, and the thermostat was replaced (with aftermarket part) this past fall. And I actually replaced the radiator cap a couple weeks ago. I know when the thermostat was replaced the coolant was flushed. But it still could be that there’s air. Another thing it does is as it’s overheating, the resevoir tank fills all the way up, sometimes spills out and the cap is as tight as crap.
