Hey first time poster here, and i have a problem with my 93 honda del sol si. It started overheating one day when i was coming home from work. The top radiator hose was hot, but the the lower (leading to the thermostat) was cold, so i replaced the thermostat. Unfortunately that wasn’t the issue as it is still overheating. I have no coolant leaks that i can find, and haven’t seen any loss of coolant from the reservoir. The car will overheat when under load such as up hill or accelerating, but will cool down when stopped, right to where it normally is on the gauge. its been about 20-30 degrees here if that matters. The water pump is new I installed it myself and its been working for about 3-4 months now. Thanks for reading – Scott

Did you check the radiator hose again after installing the new thermostat?

I did yes, and it was still cold. I’m thinking that maybe the radiator is clogged, so thats my next plan of attack

Ensure you have the coolant topped off and you have bled the system…

If the system is full, Get that radiator blasted out… or better yet a new one… Never use tap water in a radiator, only use distilled water…

If you have a laser thermometer you may be able to pinpoint the clog (for S&G)…

                Best of luck to you

I agree with karl^^. It sounds like there may be air in the system. Do you ever hear water moving around near the dash area?

No i haven’t heard anything like that, but it only happened recently so i may not have had the opportunity or just didn’t hear it. The day it started overheating the idle began hunting as well. when i covered the FITV hole right by the throttle plate the idle smoothed. i had adjusted the valve months prior, and looking at it now saw one screw head had snapped off. My guess is that i tightened it too hard and it gave out. So i removed it and drilled the screw out and saw that the gaskets were old and hard and flat. One was wet underneath with coolant, and I want to say that maybe its sucking air into the coolant through the fitv? i used RTV and let it cure 24 hours and it seemed to work, no more hunting idle, but only for a few minutes. It returned to its previous state of hunting and overheating. I feel like an idiot for not connecting the dots sooner, that two problems occuring at the same time might be related. Sorry for the long winded response and thanks for all the help, not really sure where to go from here. I might try RTV again and then buy another if I can find it. – Scott

As stated…. It sounds like the cooling system needs bled…

Very true, and I have attempted to bleed the system, but since the coolant doesn’t circulate its really no good. If i’m correct in assuming its the fitv leaking air into it then that has to be addressed first. when i tried to bleed the system, it reached operating temperature but the fan didnt come on, since no coolant is reaching the fan switch, the fan has been confirmed to work. I’m going to see if a honda dealer has the o-rings i need and go from there i guess. – Scott
