Eric, what kind of oil you use to lubricate your bolts in your video? I noticed that it has a red color to it, so I don’t think it’s motor oil. Also, would anti-seize lubricant on the crank pulley bolt work even better than oil when you screw back the bolt?

Great video by the way. I followed your steps all the way through and was successful. Now my 98 Accord V6 runs smoother than before I changed the timing belt on it. I found your tips to be really handy and useful. Keep up the great work and the videos coming!

Eric, I also changed the passenger side engine mount like you suggested in your VManual because I saw cracks in the rubber engine mount. Now when I shift from park to drive, the shifting is significantly smoother without hearing a loud “thud” like the engine is suddenly being dropped on the transmission. Would there be any benefits to changing the other 3 engine mounts? The engine mounts aren’t cheap hear in Canada. The one I changed set me back $100.

Well I’m not eric, but if your other mounts are cracked or worn it is best to replace them, because a worn mount can put added stress on your new mount causing it to were faster… Or at least that is my experience…

I’ve always revved the engine in neutral and observed for any engine rocking as a way of testing mounts on the fly… However this is apparently frowned on… And I would not do it since you just put a good motor mount on, and really you don’t want to push it…

So have someone back up and forwards gently and observe if the engine rolls any…

The side and front motor mounts commonly need to be replaced on that sixth generation of Accord with V6 J30 engine. So I would check the front mount as well. You need to be aware that there is vacuum line on the bottom of this mount, so be careful and remove that line first prior to removal. The rear mount rarely needs to be replaced and it is difficult to access and replace.
The Honda service manual says to apply motor oil to the crank bolt and between the washer and bolt head. I think that is what Eric is using in his video.

I believe Eric used transmission fluid for the lube.

As College main said, it was transmission fluid. I used to have it by the case since I did so many Honda transmission replacements under warranty. They used to give us a whole case of fluid when we did the replacement when all we needed was 5 quarts.

Do not put anything on the crank bolt when installing it. Perhaps a little oil, but not antisieze.

As for engine mounts. Mostly it’s just the front and side engine mount that go bad on that model. I usually replaced the front mount when replacing the transmission because it was easy when the subframe was out of the vehicle. If you have and Acura TL or CL from 99-03, you will need a transmission at some point, trust me.

I believe it was a 2002 TL that was used in the video. And yes, it did have a replacement transmission in it.

I know Eric stated it was a 2002 Acura TL, but it appears to be a 1998-2002 Accord. I have purchased this video as well and it’s worth the money. If you have 2003 and up Accord the serpentine belt and power steering pump setup is different. Those models use only one belt vs two on the 98-02 models, but other than that the steps to remove/replace are the same for the J30 series.

So are you saying I don’t know what car I was working on? B)
