Honda Intermitant Fault

      Morning Eric.
      I have a honda civic auto 1998. I have an intermitant fault, sometimes when the car is stationary and you put the car into drive and depress the gás pedal the car just splutters and the rpm will not increase then after a few seconds the car will just get up and go. The EML does not come on so l assume there are no faults. This problem only seems to occur at low rpm. I have changed the Fuel Pump, Fuel Filter, Map Sensor, Spark Plugs, Plug Leads, Coil Inside the distributor. I still have the same problem. I have also diconnected the Battery and joined the neg/positive calbles together for about !hr to clean the computer.
      Can you help.

        If the car is in park does the engine rev strong? What is the cars idle at?
        Have you cleaned the tb and IAC?

            If the car is in Park the rpm is around 850. From cold its around 1200 as it warms up it drops to 850.
            Do you think this could be an IACV problem if so how can l clean it as l live in Brasil and these cleaning products are hard to find. Can l use purê Alchol. My engine No, D16Y7.

              Your idle on the car is a little high. If your car was from Canada idle is 700-800
              if us 650-750.rpm you may want to check for vacuum leaks. Try unplugging the
              IAC when the engine is at operating temp. It should want to stumble. Does your
              car have a fitv also? more in this link.

                May l ask what is a fita? as l mentioned before l do not have an idle problem it is when you depress the gás pedal the car sometimes just (goes put put) and no rpm increase, then after a few seconds it will get up and go. Also when l am experiencing this problem if you put the car in Netural the rpm will increase straight away. As you never when it is going to happen pulling out from a juntion is rather worrying. Thank you for your time.

                  Ok lets back up a moment. If the car is in park can you rev the engine or does it sputter? Fitv is
                  the fast idle valve. What I’m tying to determine is why your idle is higher than normal? Have you checked for
                  vacuum leaks?

                    Good morning, l will try and explain again.

                    1. WHEN YOU PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE FROM A STATIONARY POSITION AND TRY TO MOVE FORWARD SOMETIMES THE ENGINE JUST POPS AND BANGS AND THE RPM WON,T INCREASE, THEN AFTER A FEW SECONDS IT WILL CLEAR ITSELF. YOU CAN DRIVE THE CAR NORMALLY, UNTIL YOU HAVE TO STOP, ie. A JUNTION THEN MAYBE IT WILL DO IT AGAIN.
                    2.WHEN YOU PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE AND TRY TO MOVE AWAY AND IF IT STARTS TO POP AND BANG WITH NO RPM INCREASE, IF YOU MOVE THE LEVER FROM DRIVE TO NETURAL THE RPM GOES UP INSTANTLEY. IF THE CAR IS IN PARK AND YOU DEPRESS THE GAS THE RPM IS INSTANT NO PROBLEM.
                    3. HAVE TO SAY THE IDLE VARIES SOMETIMES IT IDLES AT 1,000RPM SOMETIMES 600RPM SOMETIMES AROUND 800RPM.
                    4. I HAVE CLEANED THE (TB)BAND THE (IACV).
                    5. SO THIS SITUATION ONLY HAPPENS AT LOW RPM WHEN THE CAR IS UNDER LOAD, SO COULD THIS BE A PROBLEM WITH THE (IACV)

                      seems like a transmission problem due to the fact when in park or neutral
                      the engine will rev strong. Once engaged in gear the trans is bogging your
                      engine.

                          If I had a little more to go on like a code to give a direction to go in that would be helpful.
                          As you stated there are many things it could be and based on your description of the rpm
                          won’t increase is pretty vague. good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

                            That’s how these forums work. Eric can’t answer all the questions, but if we can keep this thread going other people with more experience might be able to help.

                            Most of us don’t do transmission work, and most bad transmissions I’ve seen had issues with slipping bands or weak torque converters. Forget the transmission for now. Could be an issue with timing advance or IAC valve responding too slowly. If you turn the Ac on does the issue go away? Ac often makes the engine idle faster. Other options for this kind of hesitation might be fuel pressure or even battery problems.
