      I have a 98 Honda Accord LX 4cyl 4-DR – 4-speed Automatic

I’m installing a rebuilt engine and it appears I’m missing one dust ring/spacer (see attached pictures)that rests on the each end of the drive shaft that connects to each knuckle at the wheel bearing. I had a wheel bearing replace 2 summers ago on a cross country trip and I’m assuming it (the plastic spacer) was not reinstalled when the when the drive shaft was placed back into the steering knuckle. The drive shafts are about two years old and in good condition so I would prefer not to buy a new drive shaft just to get this single rubber dust ring. Does anyone know who manufactures Honda drive shafts and maybe I can cut to the source like I do for Denso parts. BTW the part is approximately 1&7/8th inches in diameter by 3/16 inch wide.

      Thanks

I believe you are looking for the dust deflector… I think they are sold in a set…(see parts group #1)

I believe the part number is 01463-SM4-A00

Here is a link… You may be able to shop around for a better price…

Call the local Honda dealership parts dept. or ebay.

Thanks for the idea. After visiting 5 different Honda dealers in San Diego I found out that the dust ring only comes as part of a new driveshaft assembly. Two junk yards would only sell it to me as part of a used drive shaft, which I don’t need since both drive shafts were replaced two years ago. I asked the Honda dealers to check their drive shaft cores for dust rings, but most advised they quickly send these to Honda, in Ohio to get remanufactured. Three local independent mechanics all thought the dust ring was actually a bearing seal, which is not correct. End solution is tomorrow I’ll install the drive shafts with the dust ring on the driver side and I’ll try to use a gasket sealer passenger side to protect the wheel bearing in the knuckle.

            Open to additional solutions though!

Can you post a picture of where it goes on the car?

Are you talking about this (this is on a Civic):

Unsure if the rubber piece inside the wheel bearing is the same as the rubber piece I’m referring to comes with the drive shaft. See attached pictures of where it is on my vehicle 98 Accord LX 4cly. I’m inclined to believe if a rubber seal came out of wheel bearing it would be pretty damaged as the clearances for a honda front wheel bearing are fairly small.

Don’t worry about it. Especially if you live in San Diego. I don’t think you would suffer ANY adverse effects from not having it installed. In fact, many reman axles don’t come with those still attached. It helps keep out the weather. Considering you live in an area that doesn’t often see rain and probably has never seen snow and ice, I don’t think it’s worth worrying about.

If you’re really animate, you might consider gluing on the one you have.
