      Hi guys/Eric,

I have a 1996 Honda Del Sol that started making a weird belt/pully noise. I’ve put a video on youtube, and also have seen a few videos where people have the exact same issue, but no resolution. It seems after about 2200 rpm it goes away, but when pulling out it’s very annoying. As a side note the power steering pump pully was bent and replaced right before I bought the car, and the salesman told me that the mechanic was blasting away at it with an impact trying to loosen it, but tightening it since it has reverse threads. Any suggestions? Thanks a ton in advance!

Honestly I don’t think the Civic pulley has accommodations for that tool. Normally all I need to do is hit it with an impact and it comes loose. You can also remove the cover going to the transmission and wedge something in between the flywheel and engine block to keep it from spinning.

Thanks, I bought a 600 foot lbs impact and it came right off which I didn’t expect. I got everything changed up (go me) and the car seems to run fine, but I may have put the timing belt on a little tight, as it makes some noise still. Another thing I didn’t have a whole lot of time to mess with was that the 3 belts for the ps, ac, and alt all were kind of different tensions, could this assist in the noise making? I’ll play with it a little this afternoon when I get a moment and some dry weather!

Are your other belts adjusted to the correct tension? If there too tight, they will make noise as well as prematurely wear out components.

            Keep us posted.

You can spray each belt with a little bit of water and if the noise goes away, there’s the prob.

If memory serves this was a timing belt tension issue caused by a faulty tensioner. If that’s not the case let me know.

                  Update:

I had the other three belts and cover off and the car still made the noise. After playing with it for a little while I got some tension off of the belt and now it only makes the noise after the car warms up. The belt tension seems to be correct. (I’ll get a video soon) My question is, how do I know when the tension is perfect? It seems no matter what as soon as I tighten the tensioner bolt it makes the belt just a hair too tight. Even if I put it at tdc, loosen the belt, make sure the belt has more play in it, then tighten the tensioner bolt it goes back to being a little too tight. (never actually turning the engine over) Any suggestions?

                  Thanks!

The procedure for tightening the belt is in this video. You should never pry on the tensioner to set the tension. By your description you may have a problem with the tensioner itself if setting the belt tension correctly does not solve the issue.

When I follow that procedure the tension gets super tight and whines like crazy. Could overtightening the tensioner bolt cause the tensioner to go bad, or make noise all the time after, even if the belt is adjusted right? The tensioner is new but maybe I tightened it too much when I first put it on. I had the belt too tight when I first changed it but had to drive it to work the next day like that as I ran out of time and had no other options besides calling off.

Actually that procedure is set up to prevent over tightening. I suppose you can over tighten the tensioner bolt and it may be possible to damage the tensioner if this is done. You may need to try a new tensioner.

Ok, thanks. I think that’s what I did, over tighten the bolt. In your video I know you press on the belt and mention that that’s how much tension you want, but I couldn’t really see….so how much play should be belt have on it?

It should be ‘banjo tight’ meaning very little deflection but not to the point where the belt stretches. If you do it the way I show in the video and DON’T pry on the tensioner you should be able to set the proper tension.

                              solution:

I replaced the tensioner and followed your instructions and set the correct tension on the first try. Thanks!
