      Hi guys/Eric,

I have a 1996 Honda Del Sol that started making a weird belt/pully noise. I’ve put a video on youtube, and also have seen a few videos where people have the exact same issue, but no resolution. It seems after about 2200 rpm it goes away, but when pulling out it’s very annoying. As a side note the power steering pump pully was bent and replaced right before I bought the car, and the salesman told me that the mechanic was blasting away at it with an impact trying to loosen it, but tightening it since it has reverse threads. Any suggestions? Thanks a ton in advance!

      Here’s my video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNEmaTXH9Dk&feature=plcp

a bad tensioner will cause this . to loose the belt will rub againts the houseing . try replaceing all belts and timeing belt with all tensioner’s . if it still does it then it is possible that when the machince was over tighting things he crate a binde .

I agree with this also when your in there with the timing belt replace the water pump, but does sound like the timing belt is rubbing.

If you put your hand on the timing cover, does it feel like something is rubbing against it? Also try pushing on the timing cover to see if the noise gets louder.

To me it sounds like the timing belt tension is wrong. It’s easy enough to reset but if it still persists after you reset it then it could be the tensioner pulley or something like that. I show how to tension the belt in this video.

Thanks for the replies guys! I had a feeling it was with the tension too so I took a video of me pushing on it, which I’ll upload when I get home. Also, it doesn’t make that noise really at all when it’s cool, but after it warms up it makes it constantly…could this be because the timing belt gets softer when it’s warm, like a garden hose left in the sun?

That is VERY loose. Retention it or replace the belt and tensioner and water pump.

Thanks alot! I assumed it was too loose but don’t know a whole lot about them…looks like I came to the right place for some good honest answers! This weekend I’ll tighten it up a bit and very soon it’s time to replace it anyways, because I’m not so sure it was replaced yet, with 103 on the odometer.

                      Thanks again.

If this is the original timing belt that was on the motor it is definitely about time to change it out.

I believe it is, so this weekend it’s getting changed for sure. Quick question, is tightening the belt as easy as it looks in the video? I played with it for a few minutes before it got dark and it didn’t seem like I could get it any better than it was.

its probably all worn out so you might have issues tightening it or might have skipped a tooth, if your are doing it this weekend then you should be ok.

Its very easy to replace a belt and set the correct tension. Just do not over tighten the belt. There should be some deflection.

Good luck and keep us posted.

If the belt did skip a tooth what symptoms would you see? Would it run funny, sound different, or anything like that? Just curious

you might be ok but usually systems are it runs like crap and no power.

Is there a way to get the crank bolt off without using a tool that holds the balancer in place? I tried everywhere and nobody had one, just pullers and installers.

attached is what I was looking for..
