Sounds like the fuel pump is bleeding the pressure back into the tank and you are having to wait till the entire system re-primes again.

If you can get a fuel pressure gauge on the system and check the pressure, it should be somewhere between 31 and 38 psi. And than watch the gauge once you shut the motor down. If it starts to slowly fall to zero (might have to leave the gauge on for awhile) you have a faulty fuel pump.

If you cant get a gauge you can try this trick. In the morning when you know it will be hard to start, just turn the key to the “run” (don’t crank) position wait until you hear the pump go off and then turn the key off and than back to run (no cranking) wait again and do it a third time than turn the key off and crank it, if it starts right away than you most likely have a bad pump.

I have had some experience with civics having this issue and the fuel pressure regulator no longer seals internally and bleeds fuel back through the vacuum line you may also notice a bit of black smoke when you finally get the vehicle to turn over because the engine runs rich for the first little cycle. Hope this helps 😀

            Good idea.

A good way to test Rogue’s suggestion is to unplug the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator while it is running and just wait.

Does a Civic use a vacuum line setup like that?

Yes, look at ur fuel rail and youll see it on ur model civic on top towards the left. itll have a skinny vacuum hose comming out of it that leads to the intake manifold.

Forgive me, it was on the right not the left side on ur civic.

Thanks Raistian77 for the correction and pics
