      I’m sure some trained Honda techs will chime in here also, but just in a general sense, I would go with the junkyard short block and vtec head combination if possible. Of course you will want to make sure the vtec head’s fire deck is flat (within spec). Also check clearances on the junkyard engine’s crank/rods, install a new oil pump, and re-torque everything to the proper spec.

      Oh, and I forgot to mention: find out what caused the original engine to fail so you don’t have a repeat performance.

        The VTEC head will work, but you need to make sure there are the correct oil ports opened up on the short block. Somethings just do not slap together well.

          Swapping the crank and rods will require you to tear down both engines and fit new bearings anyway. If the knock in your original engine is bearing-related, you might be able to fix it with new bearings, so why bother tearing down two engines when you might only need to tear down one?
