Hi. Just posting to see any suggestions on performances upgrades for my 2005 Honda Civic. I have a K&N short ram intake, header and 2″ exhaust system. The engine is completely stock, haven’t changed anything. Also, could anyone explain to me how forged pistons and h-beam rods make my car run faster? I almost have an idea why, but any advice on it is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Things like pistons and rods will not make your car run faster by themselves. Their purpose is to allow you engine to run higher RPMs and operate at higher compression ratios which would cause stock components to fail.

Your engine has to be built/modified to operate under these conditions before these components will have any benefit.

          Built/modified in what way?

Forced induction, nitrous. The expensive modifications that would require a complete rebuild to avoid killing your motor.

Look into getting a new PCM and a professional tune. Doing smaller things like upgrading the injectors before hand would help with the results. I work with several hardcore Honda guys and the best thing you can do is to get a tune. Most modern cars don’t really have anything you can magically do to add power, anyone who says otherwise is lying. I’m not trying to pass the buck but you should go out and find a forum for your specific car, that’s really the best way to find out what your car/engine is capable of.

The D17 really doesnt respond all that well to mods. The first thing I would look at would be to remove restrictions. The intake manifolds are known weak spots for flow. Replacement of the manifold with one from the D16 would be a good start. Next would be the head which is the next item in line that has some pretty serious restrictions.

Honestly it would probably be easier to find a wrecked Si, and pull the engine from it.

when it comes to engine horsepower if you have the “Bottom end.” option for a engine that doesn’t supply as much power it is wise to go with the engine with higher end output. Its kind of like if i had a Buick Century Custom with the 3100SFI and wanted it to go faster, and try to upgrade the 3100, i would be better off doing a engine swap with a Regal GS or even a later model Grand Prix GTP with the L-67 or L-32 3800, out the factory the 3800 L-32 produces 260HP, while the 3100 SFI can only manage 175HP, so right there is almost a 100HP gain just with the engine swap.

from there its even easier to mod because its already supercharged, the engine already has forced induction, re tuning the PCM or getting a new one, then installing larger fuel injectors and a smaller diameter pulley for the supercharger will add more power, as much as 50-100HP!

With a Honda Civic that isn’t any different, the engine in your car i am sure was never meant to produce power, its probably purley a economy engine, so trying to push power out of it would be senseless, if you tried putting a turbo on it could the internals handle the boost? and that is how a lot of these honda civic boys are getting their power these days, boosting the engine, to do that safely i would alone just install the engine that is a little more performance orientated.

You drive an EM2?? 2 dr coupe?? The car already has either 115 or 127 hp. It has a fairly good acceleration, topspeed not so, but it’s fast enough for us/canada streets. There is nothing you can really do that would make you happy, with that 1,7 l engine, unless you went turbo/supercharger. For the money that would cost, you could swap in a K20/K24 from civic si/civic type r/RSX/TSX. A little mods here and there and without turbo/sc, you have good 220-230 horsies. A nice configuration for a vehicle with such a light body.. You can recon with 150-170 wtq, so she would pull in every gear…

Did you make any decisions on your Civic?
