Hi Ericthecarguy:
I”m mentally preparing myself for a clutch/transmission job on my Honda civic with a 5 speed manual transmission. I’ve read the info for manual transmission that you posted here http://www.ericthecarguy.com/faq/solving-transmission-problems?limitstart=0, but this deals mostly with problems shifting.
My problem is not so much shifting (although on very rare occasions I’ve had to let the car roll about an inch in order to engage first or reverse gear), but with noise. For instance:
– when I’m idling at a traffic light I hear a noise that disappears once I press the clutch pedal.
– when downshifting to lower gears to assist with breaking, there is noise that’s different than the higher revs on the engine. Of course I have revved the engine with the clutch fully pressed and that ‘extra’ noise doesn’t appear. To me all this points that there may be something wrong with clutch assembly or the transmission or both. What else can I do as far diagnosing where or what the issues might be?
If I’m to do a clutch/transmission job, I plan to do this in the spring – i.e. when the temperatures are on the rise; it’s easier to work when the fingers are not stiff :-). The ‘easy’ components would be the clutch assembly and the throwout bearing; but in case I need to open the transmission to replace the input shaft bearing, what else do I need to look inside the gearbox to see if it needs more attention?
